Re: Canon 400D won't power up...

a number of new generation devices suffer from DOA (or early death)
often stuff happens on the first day or shortly after
thats where warranty comes in handy

return to vendor and replacement usually is offered without question

otherwise run a multimeter over the batteries and see if they have discharged themselves or failed

Rebel T2i won't power on

I had this problem and thank you to the gent that suggested there was a battery compartment closing detection mechanism. I have a battery grip and had removed that to register my t2i (needed the serial number on the bottom) and never checked operation after replacing. I toyed with the lever using a pen and noticed the red light flicker. I replaced the battery grip with batteries and all is well.
Sometimes we need a nudge to dig deeper... I had looked at the possibility of a door closed switch much the same as the the switch on the sd card door. I took a second look and found it. Thanks a million for jogging my analytical brain!

Lost solution disk and directional manual disk need downloads

You don't need any special software to use your camera.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or, despite what I said first, you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Picsaa.

Bought used BG-E5 online. Looking for instruction manual.

I've just looked around for it and can't find a .pdf either. Is there something specific you'd like to know? I've owned 3 BG-E5's and they are very simple devices (I still have one and its manual), which might explain why no one has bothered to scan and upload the book. Basically you remove the battery door on the camera, slide the extended part of the battery grip with the contacts up into the battery compartment on the camera, tighten the screw ring on the body to hold it in place, and insert one or two batteries in the tray. There is an on/off switch which either enables or disables the buttons on the grip itself. Alternatively you can use AA batteries with the other tray provided. Other than that, there's not much else to say about it!

Can't control shutter speed

Well you can get the Canon Battery Grip For EOS-40D/30D/20D Model# BG-E2N, which has a separate set of controls including the wheel. OEM is about $170 Chinese clones $80. The camera body will probably sell for about $200 as is on eBay.

How do I use my time-lapse function, Does my camera have one?

There is no tme lapse function on the 400d however a search on ebay can come up with some 3rd party electronic shutter releases which have time lapse function fitted. Most are from Hong Kong but dont be put off I have bought lots of theses 3rd party accessories (battery grips, off camera flash cords, remote shutter releases etc) and all work faultlessly. Here is one of many.I do not own this one personally but I have several items by the "Yongnuo" company and they are great.

Turning on infared on my Canon EOS 400d DSLR

To the right of the LCD there are some small buttons. Right underneath the AV button, there's one. Press it, and you get three choices. The right most choice is self timer and wireless. Choose that option. The remote needs to be pointed towards the eye on the camera. It's on the front, on the "motor grip". And if you leave it on that setting too long, it "falls asleep", and you have to wake it up again before it'll fire remotely.

EOS 400D "lag"

Try reformatting the card. I don't know if this camera allows you to do a low level format or not. If you can do that.

EOS 400D Digital Camera Software

If you bought your camera (400D) new it would have come with RAW conversion software on a disk. You can start by installing this. To get the photos off the camera you should be able to plug it in vis the USB cable that came with it. The better way would be to buy a card reader. This is a lot quicker, save on battery wear and tear, or save you plugging in the power.

Alternative software would be to buy Adobe Photoshop Elements for the RAW processing. This is a good start for most people.
