Question about Vizio GV42L 42 in. LCD Television

1 Answer

I have a 42 inch Vizio LCD 1080P Gallevia model flat screen. It's coming up in December of 2013 on being four years old. After turning on the TV - ten (10 - 15 minutes) or so, later three-quarters of the screen goes dark, then after a little while, the screen comes back to normal. Also, the screen goes dark from side to side - then will resume back to normal. After doing these two things alternatively, the TV goes back to completely "normal" overall...This just began happening in the last few days - it's Wednesday, 10/16...Does anyone have any ideas what is possibly wrong? Thank you...

Sounds like the back light is going out or a connection to the back light has loosened of the years

Testimonial: "Hello Kelly: I will get a friend to look at the "back light" or the aformentioned connection. I appreciate the suggest potential problem. If it's a back light going out, and dying a slow death, what does it cost to replace? Thank you! Best regards, Steve"

That would depend on your local repair shop, or if you were doing it yourself, the parts can be found online and can range from $25 to $200 depending on who and where you purchase them from.

Hello Kelly: What do you think of two TV flat screen repair guys having completely different opinions on my Vizio Gallevia current problem? One says, "it's a bad inverter module - $150.00 or so to fix.

It is always possible to get different opinions on any issue, however without testing the item, all opinions are just opinions based on the symptoms that are described, but it's not a bad LCD since it still works, it's not a bad inverter since the issue is as you described, it's either a cold soldier joint or the back light in my opinion

SOURCE: every ten to fifteen minutes the screen goes blank

It can be that the 12/24vdc power supply go into shut down mode due to short circuits in the backlight inverter board. You need to check the output voltages of the power supply with and without the backlight inverter board connected to the power supply.

SOURCE: My Vizio LCD TV screen fades to dark. Sound stays on.

I w having this same issue when watching a Blu-Ray disc. I found it to be dependent upon what picture mode the TV was set to. By this I mean certain picture modes would cause the TV to dim during dark scenes of a movie. Changing the picture mode helped a lot.

I have a 2007 Vizio that after about 4 years began having a startup problem where the screen flashes on and off until it warms up, about 10 minutes on a cold day. For the split second that it is on,

Vizio is a good television. But over the years, the Capacitors will dry up. Flat Panel tv's that come from china use cheap capacitors, even in Vizios. There are monitoring IC's, and if the reference voltage (what the capacitor is supplying to the IC), the set will not turn on, or will be intermittent. Replace the Capacitors on the power supply board and see if set comes on. The Reference IC is a good way of telling if a capacitor is bad. The IC monitors reference voltage in the supply area.

4 year old vizio 42 inch tv lcd. While watching tv, the screen started dimming. There is a 4 inch shadow all along left side of the screen and the 1 inch line shadow going down the middle of the screen.

Maybe a power supply or related issue but at 4 years of age the set has reached its life span----parts will be hard or impossible to find.

If you got four years I would retire it and recycle it and then replace it.

I cannot switch to 1080p on my Vizio. It is a full HD TV but will not do 1080p and I can't switch resolution off of 480p even with a Blu-Ray.

The resolution is not set at the TV, it is set by the video sources. The TV will detect the resolution and display what it is receiving.
1080P signal = 1080p display.
Does it do that on all sources?

I have a 42 inch Gallevia model GV 42L. When TV is initially turned on blue screen comes up for about 2 seconds, it then goes black and a screeching noise comes through both speakers on the TV. No...

The power source has failed - the sound is the source that autooscillates because even its protections have been damaged and are no longer capable of safely shut it down.
It's a big failure so call a repairman, ther's nothing more you can do.

I turn on the tv and it has a blue screen and no

Just try to reset so picture will back to normal again, some LCD TVs have a reset button. If available and accessible, try using the reset buttons before using the steps below. Using the reset buttons can save time.
1. Unplug the LCD TV power cord from the power outlet.
2. Unplug any connected devices (DVD, Set-top boxes, etc...)
3. Press and hold the LCD TV power button for five seconds.
4. Plug the LCD TV power cord back into the power outlet and turn on the TV.
5. Open the on-screen menu to confirm that the LCD TV is responding again.
6. Turn off the LCD TV and reconnect the devices.
7. Turn on the LCD TV.

Hope it may help you;

My GV42L had issues from the ssart and now it shows No Signal and shuts of in 2-3 seconds. I read many similar issues on this site with VIZIO.

Vizio GV42L LCD TV screen black when turn TV on first time

If you are using a set top box this might be caused by turnig the box on at the same tie as you turn the tv on or slightly after you turn the tv on.  If you are using compnent or HDMI inputs the set needs to see the signal as it is turned on to know what formt the signal is in.
