Question about Refrigerators

Open Question

Caple CAFF205SS - we have just had this installed but have a problem in that the 'flap' that allows the ice out of the freezer into the cup does not open when the lever is pressed, meaning the ice builds up inside the freezer compartment.

The description says you have an LG fridge?  I may need the entire model # from the sticker inside the fridge to tell for sure, but there is a motor behind the dispenser controls that opens the door.  Let me know if you need more help.  Also, you can view parts and diagrams at http://www.appliancepartspros.com/.

SOURCE: GE Profile Ice flap is broken

The part number you need is WR62X10055 . This is the sokenoid and plunger which operates the flap . They tend to rust badly , keeping the flap from opening/closing . With a small screwdriver , pry the control panel ( from the bottom only ) outwards . This panel is the push buttons for crush , cube , water . Once removed , there are 4 screws , one on each corner of the white housing . Unplug the 3 plugs on the control panel first . Remove the 4 screws and slide out the housing . The solenoid and plunger are at the top right , held on by 3 screws . Replace solenoid AND plunger , and reassemble in reverse . Also , remove the top freezer door hinge cover to access the plug which should be unplugged first . After reassembling dispensor , dont forget to plug the plug back in .

The ice flap on my freezer will not stay open. If I reach up and grab the flap as it's opening, the ice will flow freely. But if I don't grab the flap and keep it open, the ice won't dispense. It's no

Kristen,
Thank you for giving more information. I believe you will need to replace the flapper on the ice dispenser. I based this answer on the following: you mentioned when the door is held open ice comes out. Let me know if this helps. As you may know, there are several different things that could cause this issue, but this is the most common one of them. Here is a how to video on this type of repair:

Ice and water keeps coming out

Cup lever isn't returning to the off or close position completely. Suggest checking for rusty spring, dirty parts restricting lever and other parts there from moving freely. Could be the switches are worn out as well. Dis-assemble and clean all parts and inspect or replace old worn switches. Inspect ice drop/ flap door for mildew, sticky residue from drinks and ice build up.

Walk in freezer solenoid not opening

Many Kenmore side-by-side refrigerators have an ice and water dispenser installed on the outside of the freezer door. The ice dispenser has a flap that opens to allow ice to be released, and closes after dispensing to keep the cold air inside of the freezer. The dispenser flap is opened and closed by a solenoid, that when energized pulls the plunger attached to the flap, opening the door. If the flap stops opening and closing, it is likely due to a faulty solenoid.

The flap is what open and closes to allow more or less cold air in from the freezer. There could be ice buildup inside the freezer causing this or a mechanical noise of the flap and motor running. See if you can see it from the freezer side of the vent.

Our new 48" Viking side by side does not feed ice cubes adequately. If you need several glasses of cubes it stops feeding and when one opens the freezer door they are piled up and fall all over the floor....

I experienced the same problem several times with our VCSB483DSS also.

What I found was that the ice come down the chute side way and got stuck at the flap in the door. As you continue to press for ice, the machine pushes more ice & they all back up in side the chute and in the door, ready to dump on unsuspecting person who open the freezer door.

I think the the problems are:
1 - over application of foam insulation in the chute pathway in the door.
2 - possible bad timing on the flap opening causing the falling ice to get stuck.

My solution for the past 6 years:
1 - clean out the over application of foam insulation - this reduce the incident frequency from once a month to once or twice a year.
2 - inform my family member that if while you pressed for ice, and the ice is not dropping, but you hear the motor still cranking away, stop pressing for ice immediately. Stick you finger up the dispenser to make sure the flap is open, and push the ice to un-stuck them. And finally, be prepare to get 2 cups full of ice.

Viking may make professional quality fridge (13 years experience in restaurant business), but ice & water dispenser is not their strong point.

The ice shoot just snapps of of the arm . Pt # 2180224 . Once off , you will see how to snap back on . Usually an ice guide ( ice shoot ) will not allow the flap to close if shoot is broken .
