It can be a nightmare to find out what is causing the dog ear page or folded page at the corner. Check your glass **** inside the scanner to make sure its seated in the scanner properly. The big one is the check the metal paper guides in the scanner paper path. If a guide is bend it will hook the paper and cause it to fold over.

It may be the clutch on the left side of the ADF. there are 2 there, one does the pick roller the other the tray. you could try swapping them over and see what happens.
also the sensor sometimes sees the underside of the top of the ADF and thinks its more paper, therefore keeping the tray up. try running a perment black pen around the inside of the hole in the tray where you put the paper to stop too much light getting in. (dont colour in the sensor itself though!)

Perhaps you try Bell & Howell to provide an update of the firmware for your scanner. But to provide an upgrade, there must be an upgrade. The only way to find out, is to goto their website and ask there.
