SOURCE: Freezer/refrigerator compressor running constantly

th ebi-metal is a thermostat which shuts the defrost heater on/off, but doesnt actually put the unit into defrost. if it were bad the defrost heater would never go on resulting in massive build up of ice on back wall of freezer, and noticable refrigeration sect. cooling.. dont know how you know the compressor never shuts down, but if that the case perhaps you have a sealed system/ freon issue. try removing the back panel of freezer section and check the evaporator coil. you shuld have an even frost pattern over the entire evap coil. if theres just frost over the top 1or 2 coils, and the rest of coil is shiny aluminum , thats an indication of a sealed system issue.( 5 year part warr by manufacture) def not a do it yourself issue...but that would,, depending on extent of restriction/loss of freon,, cause freezer to freeze and defrost eratically, and the compressor would be running constantly trying to achieve a good stable temp

SOURCE: Defrost timer

http://www.us1internet.com/FRS24XGCW2_141846.htm

The above URL will take you to an exploded view of the controls. Look at number 23 which will be located behind toe plate below door on the left side. That is the defrost timer. Rotate the clutch head screw Clockwise SLOWLY until you hear a loud click. That is the defrost timer starting the defrost. If the unit restarts after 18-22 minutes and defrost does not take place you problem is most likely the defrost thermostat.

Freezer side not freezing

Check for ice / frosting inside the freezer .... If present you probably have a defrost problem.... This causes the freezer coil to ice up and block the air flow ... the causes could be a bad defrost heater , defrost timer, defrost sensors, or control board. Also make sure that the condenser coil is clean. remove ALL dust with a vacuum and a coil brush .the coil is located either on the bottom or on the back side of the unit... You didn't give the Make and model #

Defroster timer location

Good day,
Sorry, no timer. This machine is run by a motherboard which gets it's data from a series of thermistors.
The motherboard is located on the back rear of the machine behind a removable cover.
In the freezer, behind the rear panel, is a main heater located at the bottom of the evap coil.
As well there is a limiter thermostat located on the top of that coil. Either can go bad. To test you need an ohm meter and a decent knowledge of electrical.
2 thermistors are located in the same area. One helps decide when to defrost, and the other is used to control fan motor speed. (simplified).
If you feel comfortable digging that deep, you can start testing, and/or removing suspected parts and taking them to an appliance parts house for testing. The motherboard is very pricey.

Look here if you want to see a breakdown of the machine..
Copy model number first.

Frige icing up every 1 or 2 days roper

Hi, more then likely it would be the defrost timer that is causing you're problem. On some models they are located at that back bottom corner, mounted with a couple of screws. If you can't locate it, look at the schematic on the back and look for DFT and locate it from there. This will be the problem. Defrost timer failing.
Best of Luck,

Freezer side of refridgerator doesn't freeze foods properly and also makes only about 10 cubes a day. food side works fine, it's a Hotpoint model #HSS251FMB WW

If freezer is icing up, you might have a defrost problem. Frost free models have a heating element that is controlled by a timer to automatically defrost ice, defrost timer turns on defrost heating element every 12 hours to melt ice in freezer and allow good air flow.
You can test defrost element with an ohm meter(located inside freezer coils-will have two wires going to a plug connection), if OK replace defrost timer (located in various places depending on make and model

It just quit after a couple of months of very little use.

Most likely you have a defrost problem. When you unplug it for a couple of days, it thaws out and you plug it back in and it works until it freezes up again. Possible problem ...1 of 3...defrost timer...2 of 3...defrost heater...3 of 3...defrost bi-metal.

Cooling sometimes, freezer leaking water when it stops freezing

It is probably the defrost thermostat located on upper condenser coil to the left of the fan in the freezer compartment. If not, it could be the defrost timer located near the thermostat in the refrigerator under the plastic dome where the light is. If the defost thermostat or defrost timer is not cycling the defroster heater element on and off correctly... an ice dam forms clogging the drain tube which freezes and blocks water (from the the defroster) to draining down and into the evaporator pan located on top of the compressor in the rear of the unit near the floor.

TRUE freezer model number GDM-49F.

Your unit should have a defrost timer. The timer may be stuck in a defrost. It should be located at the bottom of the unit next to the compressor.Open the door to the timer and observe the position of the timer. If you turn the knob and the unit starts up,it's the timer. If this is the case, you can purchase a new one at any local a/c supply.Let me know,Mike

Freezer defrosts too long.

I might first suspect the defrost bi-metal thermostat located in the freezer compartment behind the interior panel. It's clipped onto the coils and is usually a little round disk with a couple wires coming out of it. The reason I susupect it is that little device is what "opens" to kill power to the heater once the temps get hot enough to have finished melting the ice on the coils. If that is stuck "closed" or opens WAY out of it's heat range then the heat element will stay on way too long. Next is the actual defrost timer which can be a clock type timer or a circuit board. If you go to this site use GSS22JEM for the model number. Item 240 is the bi-metal, 241 is the thermistor sensor. http://www.partselect.com/Schematics/GE/00113124i06.gif Item 801 is the control board. http://www.partselect.com/Schematics/GE/00113123i02.gif
