Question about Defiant Locks & Locksmithing

Open Question

I bought a Defiant Keyed Entry 881 996 Lock yesterday. On the package, it has, adjustable backset fits both 2 3/8 in or 2 3/4in. I have a interior door, that is 1 3/4in. Can this assembly be used, on this door? Thanks Joe

SOURCE: lost keys to my Entry door lock

Visit your local Home Depot and purchase a Kwikset re-keying kit. They're inexpensive and work fine but stay alert and follow the instructions properly. This kit comes complete with proper pins as well as new keys. Good Luck!

I bought a DEFIANT KEY PAD DEADBOLT.

Usually you just take it apart and turn everything around, the keypad would be turned over and the bolt would be removed and turned to the reverse of where it was.

If it is the type below, I am thinking you would remove the deadbolt part and turn it and then there must be something inside that reverses the throw of the bolt. No instructions with it?

How to install new door lock

For a residential door, you may choose either 2 3/4" (70 mm) backset or 2 3/8" (60 mm) backset. Some locks are not adjustable.
Choose the backset required for the lock. Check the thickness of the door. Standard installation height is 35-36" above the floor.
Bore a 1" diameter hole into the edge of the door and a 2 1/8" hole through the face. A drilling jig helps align these two holes. If you measure and mark the holes carefully and drill accurately, it can be done without a jig, but for about $20.00 the jig helps avoid lock alignment problems or possibly trashing a door. Follow the instructions for the jig and the lock manufacturers instructions.

Programming code will not work

I work for factorylocks.com. We get programing questions all the time for Schlage FE575/595. The factory default programming code and PIN codes are on a sticker stuck to the inside of the front housing of the lock. You will need to take the lock off of the door to see this sticker. Once you have done so, reset the lock back to the factory defaults and reprogram the locks to your settings using the programming instructions you can find here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8BgHP712eg

Schlage keyless lock lost 6 digit code and no sticker inside either

You will need to take the keypad look off of your
door and record the 6 digit programming code and the two factory
default PIN codes. You then need to perform the factory reset to
erase any codes and restore the lock back to the factory defaults.
This procedure is outlined, as well as the programming of the device, in the attached instructions.

You can shake front door when locked and the door is loose not tight

It sounds like the distance between the lock in the door and the strike plate in the door frame is barely enough to meet securely. Review the lock installation sheet because it MAY be possible to adjust the "backset" for your lock. You did not mention your brand of lock. For example,
Review Steps 1 & 2 of instructions for the Powerbolt:
http://www.weiserlock.com/PDFs/instructions/Electronics/Powerbolt.pdf
Or watch this excellent installation video for the Schlage BE365, at about1:58 minutes into the video you will see how to adjust the backset:
Go to
http://consumer.schlage.com/Service-Support/Pages/InstructionsandManuals.aspx#2

Then click on "Installing your BE365 Keypad Deadbolt" video.

Many brands of lock have a similar backset adjustment, and you may have your set too short.
If yours is all ready set for the 2 3/4" backset, then you need some carpenter skills to close up the door gap.

Deadbolt backset diagram

Installation requires either a 2 3/8" or 2 3/4" backset. the diagram you requested is within this installation & programming download, which includes how to adjust the lock for either backset:

Keyed door lock is falling out

Thanks for choosing FixYa. You may have to replace the entire lock unit. Are you talking about the outside door lock? It may just new fitted back in. I am not familiar with this type, but you will have to get to it to know for sure, which would be through the interior panel.

Too long backset on new Door Knob for older home's door

You can get a variety of backsets at a GOOD door/ window company.
You may also want to look closely at the lock bolt again, because some of them come with a backset adjuster. Some of the Schlage and Kwiksets will allow you to twist the barrel and change the backset...
