OS - XP
DELL INSPIRON 1501
The problem started when I downloaded Dell recommended BIOS drivers - The computer restarted and then when my desk top opened, my Icons looked like they were in Safe Mode, very large and all over the Desktop - I restarted the computer and when it came back to the Desk top my Icons were the normal size but in the same all over the Desk top position with a whole load of Dell Icons.
Since then I have not been able to connect to the Internet via Wireless although my wireless signal is strong.
It would appear that the IP address has been lost - I contacted my provider and we manually "reinstalled" the IP address/s but this still did not work - We found that it works via the LAN cable from computer to router.
So we both agreed that we should System Restore to a date before I downloaded the BIOS drivers - But unfortunately, the system would not restore on any date I chose going back to February 2009?? I undersand that this is a common XP problem - cannot restore???
I searched the Web (via the LAN cable connection) and found what I thought was a good suggestion to Restore the system and that was to disconnect System Restore - Restart the Computer and then connect the System restore - I did this but what it did not tell me was that if you do this then you will lose all restore points - Which it did - so I now cannot go back to a date before I downloaded the Dell recommended BIOS drivers (which I do not know if they downloaded but obviously whatever it did messed up my Wireless connection/s)
Any help in restoring this would be appreciated.
I am not too much of a techie but understand and can follow most things.
Thanks
Roger

Thank you - sorry lost connection to you.
I am not sure if I have a Ell Connection Manager? Yes the wireless icon is on the system tray - I double left click on it and it takes me to Wireless Network Connection 2 "Properties" is on bottom left - I click on Properties and it goes to another "window" with four check boxes - I cannot see "allow XP to control the wireless or disable/enable the wireless adaptor the wireless adaptor etc.
I did a repair and it said - Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action could not be completed - Clearing the DNS cache
Everything else is working OK - Network I am using is configured - status connected - full signal strength excellent -
Still cannot connect to internet
do you have the Dell Connection manager active?
Do you have the wireless icon on the system tray?
If so go to the properties of the wireless and set it to allow XP to control the wireless.
Then disable the wireless adapter, the reenable it.
Finally do a repair. The check and see if the adapter picked up a valid IP address.
