Question about Proscan PS60690 60" Rear Projection Television

Proscan PS60690 "I acquired this tv a few months ago & it worked flawlessly until last week. It started turning off spontaneously and then it would just not come on. It would try to come on 3 times and then quit. I have some electronics training and am familiar with dlp, lcd, etc repair(modular) but have no experience with projection screens. I removed the light engine and after inspection noted that a resistor(#207) on the board beneath the blue light was burnt. The only info that I have is a sheet that lays out the board and what components are where. It is a 330 ohm resistor so I replaced it and when I turned the tv back on it was ok for about 45 min then shutoff again and would not come back on.(3 tries then off) The resistor I replaced is still ok, but there is obviously another problem. (that originally smoked the resistor?)Any help would be appreciated. If you need more info let me know. Thanks"

I've had this exact problem twice. The 1st time I replaced the RCA part number 205064, which I believe is called the HV splitter. I used a generic non RCA part. The TV worked great for several months but went out again and it has been broken for 2 years. I finally ordered the new true RCA part number 205064 HV splitter. The TV, again seemed to be fixed, and what I a beautiful picture it had through our cable box.

But, no happy ending at this point. It worked for a couple of days and then turned off and back on while my wife was watching it a few minutyes ago. It cycled off then back on twice in a 3 minute period so with the picture showing and tv still on she went ahead and turned it off.

This is how the problem began several years ago the 1st time it went out.

I don't want to turn it back on anymore in case the brand new HV Splitter is still OK. Does anyone know what other parts may be going out, causing the HV splitters to go bad and start shorting out.

I know the HV spitters have been an ongoing problem with these sets, but since I just put a brand new RCA one in only 2 days ago I'm wondering if something else goes out first and causes the splitter to go bad after a period of time.

I would appreciate any help. I can't afford a new set right now and the picture looks so great on this set using a cable box I feel it's definately worth fixing.

First of all I take it that your TV is a PS60690 model. Unplug the TV and let it sit for a few days because there is approximately 3,300 volts at the splitter. You’ll have to remove the front lower panel. It is held in by clips around the top. I removed it by hand. Once you get your fingers to pull it away a bit the clips should release and then you can just lift the piece up and out of your way. Next you will have to remove the convergence panel in the center. Remove the bolts that hold it in and un clip the four wire connectors (2 on each side) and set the panel to the side. The splitter is now visible by looking into the hole and up to the left. It is held in by 2 bolts one in the front of the splitter and one in the back of it. Don’t remove it until you have all of the wires removed. Remember to be very careful here because of the potential voltages. The voltage should bleed themselves off over time but might not! I used my electrical meter to test for voltage before I touched any bare wire. What I did was remove the wire with the red grommet that holds it up into the splitter. There are 3 green grommets and a black grommet. They might be hard to see the colors because of the dust …. Just wipe them off. The red one is the one on the far left of the wires that are 4 in a row. I used a screwdriver from the front and lightly pushed the retaining clip towards the back of the TV while gently pulling the wire downwards. Watch out for the little bushing that is around the wire. Try not to lose them because you will need them to put the splitter back together. Now I took the red lead from my tester and touched it to the exposed wire end that I just removed and touched the black lead to the metal part of the TV chassis where the splitter is actually mounted. Once you’ve established that there is no voltage present, label all of the rest of the wires so that they will be put back in the right places when you are ready. Test each wire the same way before touching them. Remember to be careful and capture all of the little bushings You will need the splitter before you do this so you will have to buy it. The RCA part number is 205064. I have to run right now but I will send you any info that you might need ……. Just ask …… I don’t mind helping out if I can. There is more.

Three tries, then nothing suggests a bad xformer use original quality,if you can get it,otherwise, generic is cheaper, but does not last.

Pioneer SD-582HD5 - screen went black, no sound, Poor remote feed

The blue tube might be leaking coolant in the high voltage area, that is the cause of the POP. This repair might not be a DIY because of the lethal high voltage surrounding the CRTs tubes.
The slow response from the remote could be because the coolant has affected the main board where the IR signal are going to the remote sensor.
Let me know if you require further assistance.

I have sound but no picture!

Usually a loss of picture problem on this set is caused by parts on the circuit board failing. Most often a repairman will find the problem around regulator in power supply or around main output transistor in horizontal circuit. Either way, solder work and test equip. are required.

Tv won't turn on

Usually this problem is caused by part failure on circuit board. Most often in power supply or deflection circuit. You will need test equip. and soldering/desoldering tools to fix this set. Most repair services charge 275.00-475.00 to do this repair on a PS60690. Crate is removable by removing rear cover, disconnecting spk. plugs and keyboard plug. Loosen two screws and whole thing slides out. This can save you service call fee.

Proscan not turning on

Actually, the set has the PTK188AC chassis. This is a very uncommon chassis. The most common reason for the set not starting in that chassis is a shorted high voltage splitter. That is the large black box inside the set that has 5 thick red wires in it. When the set is turned on, the computer senses the short in the high voltage circuits and immediately shuts the set back off. When the set is on, that box has dangerously high voltage in it so it should only be replaced by a qualified tech familiar with the high voltage splitters in RCA projection sets.

I've never seen the o-rings. Even the first time I replaced the HV Splitter. Thanks
