SOURCE: I lost remote is there away to manually change tv

Unfortunately, most of these projection TV's require a remote. You CAN purchase an aftermarket remote. I would look for one that has all the features you need, PIP, screen format etc.... I have found that the Sony RM-VL600 works real well with my Mitsubishi TV... kids thrashed the remotes more than once...
This particular unit has system control PROGRAMABLE buttons on the bottom row. I've been able to program them for formatting the screen, setting audio and video... Solved my issue of needing a factory remote... KEN

SOURCE: The Hitachi 51F500 set suffered

Burning smell usually signals that a part burned. This is a major malfunction, the power source of the tv was literally fried. Replacing it will be quite expensive - around $250 - and definitely a job for a pro - who know what else was damaged in there, the tv must be tested by someone who knows this very well.

Hi
;
Have the unit serviced you have no high voltage going to the picture tubes. The most common failure part to suspect is the Deflection Board.

Scratch Screen

Sorry about the late posting. The protective screen can be purchased from Tritronicsinc.com using the part number KR2074. This will cost $80.36 plus shipping. This should be a straightforward replacement. The instructions are included with the screen.

Hope this helps,
Dan

Hitachi 51F500 (Two separate problems?)

My guess is that the sound you heard was that of some High Voltage discharges that could have fed back and damaged some semiconductors including the microprocessor itself. Since it could be a very expensive repair, I would be very tempted to look around for a new HDTV by JVC or Toshiba. Hitachi has slipped a notch or two in recent years according to my experience.
