Use a business card to gap the magneto to flywheel. That dimension will work for 99.99%, and I can't tell you which one does NOT work...
Surface rust will not affect the coil function.

How do you set the gap between the coil and the flywheel

Usually you loosen the coil and it'll move in or out a little bit. Use feeler gauge on both sides of the coil. Afterwards slowly turn engine over to ensure nothing is hitting

Set timing on tecumseh 5-H.P. gasoline engine model H50-65371 J

Indications that the motor is out of time: jerks the rope out of your hand when trying to start, pops out the carb, runs but has no power and sounds 'off'.
When assembling the motor a dot on the cam gear and a dot on the crank gear need to be lined up.
If the motor has run correctly before the problem and has not been disassembled then the problem is likely external.
There are no actual timing adjustments. The flywheel key holds the flywheel in the correct position. If it is sheared or partially sheared the timing will be off. Check the flywheel key by removing the flywheel and visually inspecting the flywheel key; replace if not 100%. On assembly be sure the flywheel nut is tight or it will shear the key (again), then set the armature air gap ( gap between ignition module and flywheel magnet) to .020
On older motors the points gap can affect timing also but I dont believe your model has points. The points gap is also .020

8HP Tecumseh with no spark

Check the gap between the coil and the flywheel. You can fold a dollar bill over a few times (3 or 4 layers thick) , place it against the flywheel , **** the coil up to it , and then tighten down the coil. This will give you a good clearance between the coil and flywheel and promote good spark.

Essentially I am suggesting you use the folded dollar bill to set the coil to flywheel distance/gap.

If it still doesn't work, I am at a loss. Is this a multi cylinder engine ? If so , does it have points or electronic ignition ?

Have no spark to spark plug 16ohv 201142b

It sounds like you probably have a bad ignition coil. It's located under the flywheel cover and is usually attached with two screws. The spark plug cable originates from it. You can gap the new one with a business card placed between it and the flywheel.

Engine does not start. Starter & solenoid work fine. Checked air filter, fuel filter, fuel level, level in choke position. Plug is kind of flooded. Increased plug gap slightly. There is no spark....

Most small engines use a flywheel with a magnet embedded in it and an ignition coil with a core that sits a few thousandths away from the flywheel. Ignition coils are common failures probably because they come from our wonderful Chinese friends. They have demolished all US manufacturers. If you replace the coil, use some gauge to measure the gap between coil core and the flywheel magnet surface before removing the old coil. Otherwise you may spend a little time using trial & error to get the engine running again.
If your engine is a Briggs and Stratton, you can find very complete maintenance downloadable information on their website. This will pertain to the engine only, not the mower.
Dunno about Tecumseh, haven't had much need for service info on those.

I am looking for the coil gap on a 10.5 hp. The gears on the startor broke and I am in the process of cleaning fragments from the magnets and would like to check the gap on the coil before reinstalling...

Hello,
My name is Dane and I am going to help you solve your problem.
To set the gap for the coil, get a regular buisness card and use it as a feeler gauge, it just happens to be the standard thinkness for the gap. Loosen the bolts to the coil. Rotate the flywheel so the magnets are next to the coil. Slide the buisness card in between the coil and the flywheel magnets and make sure the coil is tight against the card.
Now tighten down your coil bolts and remove the busisness card. Turn the flywheel at least 1 complete turn and make sure it doesn't hit the coil. You're done!!!
Well, I hope I've helped. If you found this information useful, please leave me some THUMBS UP if you think I'm deserving! :-) Thank you! Dane

Flywheel magnet came loose

Hello, my name is Mark
Sorry to say but the only way to fix it is to replace the flywheel. After you put the new flywheel on you will have to double check the gap between the flywheel and the coil if you take a business card it should just fit between and should be a little snug. If the coil is off a little you will have problems starting. You can adjust the gap by loosening the 2 bolts on top of the coil lust enough that you can tap the coil towards the flywheel, just before you loosen the bolts turn the flywheel so the magnets on the flywheel are not where the coil sits but just to one side or the other of the coil, then set the gap, tighten the bolts and turn the magnets are where the coil is with the business card in between. It should be fairly snug to where you can just get the card out and not tear it in any way. Put your cover on and check for spark and you should be ok. Any questions please feel free to ask. Good luck and have a nice day.
