SOURCE: Freezer/refrigerator compressor running constantly

th ebi-metal is a thermostat which shuts the defrost heater on/off, but doesnt actually put the unit into defrost. if it were bad the defrost heater would never go on resulting in massive build up of ice on back wall of freezer, and noticable refrigeration sect. cooling.. dont know how you know the compressor never shuts down, but if that the case perhaps you have a sealed system/ freon issue. try removing the back panel of freezer section and check the evaporator coil. you shuld have an even frost pattern over the entire evap coil. if theres just frost over the top 1or 2 coils, and the rest of coil is shiny aluminum , thats an indication of a sealed system issue.( 5 year part warr by manufacture) def not a do it yourself issue...but that would,, depending on extent of restriction/loss of freon,, cause freezer to freeze and defrost eratically, and the compressor would be running constantly trying to achieve a good stable temp

SOURCE: GE Profile SxS Refrigerator wont defrost after new heater installed

If one coil was burnt out and you replaced the heaters and defrost terminator switch I would recheck the continuity through the defrost heaters. You can do this with an Ohm meter with the refrigerator unplugged. If you had an open coil in one of the heaters you did not have to replace the thermo disk. If you have a complete circuit through the heaters try using the old thermo disk. If you have a meter you can check the voltage from the heater connection on one side to the inlet side of the thermo disk with the refrigerator running in the defrost mode. You should read 115-125 Volts on the meter. This reading tells you that the defrost timer is supplying power to the heater circuit.

The defrost thermostat on the defrost heater is probably bad, it's a good place too start.

also check defrost timer, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You either have an iced up evaporator coil (found in freezer) due to a failure in the defrost system: evaporator defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or a failed evaporator fan motor.

My Whirlpool Refrigerator/Freezer Model #GR2FHTXVQ00 or GR2FHTXVO00 is not keeping food cold. Food is spoiling. Freezer is cold but Refrigerator is warm.

With signs of freezing up in freezer area that would indicate a problem with the defrost components. The most likely reason would be a defrost control board. 2304093 Defrost Control Board
Here is a link to a parts manual for your model=> GR2FHTXVQ00.pdf(1101.27 KB) Look on page 3 and part location 4 That is the=> 2304093 Defrost Control BoardThe next possible parts are the 2314157 Defrost Heater Assembly found as item location 4 on page 9 of the PDF. Refrigerator and freezer get cold but freezer does not freeze whirlpool 1997 model et22dkxfn00

Can you remove the rear panel in the back of your freezer and tell me what the frost pattern looks like? When a refrigerator loses Freon the frost pattern looks like this photo HERE If the rear wall of your freezer looks like this you still are having a defrost problem photo HERE
Here is what that will look like behind the rear panel of the freezer should the defrost heater and defrost thermostat need replaced HERE
You mentioned that you have already replaced the defrost timer so we should not be concerned about that. The defrost heater=> 2315530 Defrost Heater

The defrost thermostat=> 4387503 Defrost Thermostat

Whirlpool ER2CHMXPL00 freezer is frosting up

Lets start by going inside your fresh food compartment and see if you can find a round hole most times covered by a plastic plug to hide opening. Remove plug and place a flathead screwdriver in opening and slowly turn the defrost timer clockwiseuntil you hear compressor and fans stop. This is called forcing manual defrost. After a few moments you should hear some sizzle or crackle noise coming from freezer compartment. That will be the defrost heater warming up the unmelted frost. Click Here=> ER2CHMXPL00 Liner Parts See item location 4? That is the defrost timer While the freezer has been set manually in defrost the defrost timer should be trying to come out of defrost itself after about 25 minutes. If it does not come out of defrost simply turn clockwise until the compressor restarts. If you need to do this replace the defrost timer.

sea_breeze_245.jpg
If doing the above does not help you will need to manually defrost the freezer with a hair drier. Unplug refrigerator and remove the rear panel in back of your freezer. This is where you will see the defrost heater. Click Here=> ER2CHMXPL00 Unit Parts

On that same page instructions are in a video on how to test the defrost heater. At top of this solutionI mentione the Liner Parts item number 25 is the=> 4387503 Defrost Thermostat
Most likely the defrost timer is the part that is needing replaced. If not then the other two parts listed here are very possible reasons for the defrost failure.

Omg wow Ok first thing dont call that repairman back anymore. The ice up in the freezer area is it on the back wall of the freezer inside the freezer. This is called a defrost issue and is caused by one of three parts not working either the defrost thermostat, the defrost heater, or the defrost timer in some units instead of a defrost timer they have an adaptive control board that is located behind the machine under a metal panel. One of the first things that you would do would be to remove the screws holding the rear panel to the back of the freezer this would give you access to the evaporator coil. If when you removed this panel and gained access to the evaporator coil you seen the coil iced over then you would take a hair dryer and defrost the ice up issue but this does not fix your problem. You would have to have a multimeter and perform continuity tests on the defrost thermostat and the defrost heater in the unit to assure that these are both working properly. The defrost thermostat is attached to one of the copper lines that is on the side of the coil it is a round disc like object that has two wires going to it(see diagram on link). The defrost heater is found usually along the sides and bottom of the evaporator coil (see diagram on link). Here is also a link that you can click on to learn more about this issue http://www.applianceoutletservice.com/appliance-care-tips/refrigerator-tips/refrigerator-defrost-system-information.htm if you have any further questions message me back I await your reply Thanks again Rick

The freezer will not defrost. The refrigerator makes as clicking noise as if it is calling the defrost unit, but it does not defrost.

Check the defrost heater to see if it is working. Empty the freezer contents, remove the freezer panel, defrost the ice on the coil and check to the heater element. The heating element often fails by burning out. Check with a meter and confirm that it is not open. A replacement can be found at an appliance supply house or online. Hope this helps you.

Forming ice in the freezer vent going to bottom

It could also be your defrost heater. Look in side your fridge at the adjustment knob. It is in a box attached to the ceiling of your fridge. Look under this and you should see a plastic screw. Turn this screw until the motor cuts off. Leave it off for about 30 minutes. If motor turns back on then the defrost timer is working. The defrost heater is in the back panel of the freezer. The defrost heater looks like a long tube that runs under the freezer coils and half way up both sides. If after turning the screw on the defrost timer and the fridge doesn't turn back on then it is the defrost timer. The time is inside the box the adjustment knob is on.

you will need to access the heater in the rear area of the freezer compartment and disconnect the heater element and take a continuity test of the element,if this checks good, then in the same area is your defrost timer, unplug the heater from it and hook up a voltmeter and energize the defrost timer manually and see if you have a voltage there

Sounds like the defrost timer is not tracking the time properly. The unit needs to defrost once every 6-8 hrs. in order to work. Make sure the inside (evaporator) fan is running ok. If it rund for a few days and then warms up in the refrigerator section (coil iced), then the defrost timer is the culprit.
