If the gas is more than 30 days old, and it has been sitting in hot weather (90+), then it starts to go bad, rather quickly.

(And if no fuel stabile was added to the fuel before hand)

Or, if the gas can spout was not sealed properly in storage, it could have been water contaminated, from sprinklers or rain.

It may not necessarily be the motor itself.

The cheapest fix, is to drain all of the water out of the mower's gas tank. (you will still have some bad gas in the lines)

Put some fresh gas, with fuel stabile, in the tank and see if it will start. If it does, it may take a few minutes of operation to flush the bad gas out of the line, and motor.

That was the problem with my mower. It turned out to be a gas issue, and my mower was fine. Good luck.

My lawn mower will not start. It sputters but will not fully turnover. It will continue to sputter as I adjust the choke and then eventually die.

It is probably the timing. As the engine turns the ignition fires due to the rotating magnet passing by the "magnito" coil. If the system is misaligned or dirty it is firing the spark to soon or to late in the cycle. Pull the top and have a look could be loose or have a broken wire or need to adjust the pick up gap. I am guessing that the flywheel you replaced was involved with the pull cord which means that you had that opened that portion of the motor which exposes the magnito.

My Yardman 13.5 hp Briggs rider revs up and sputters, revs up and sputters.

Does this engine have overhead valves. If yes they need to be checked for proper valve clearance. The engine must be cold to check this.

When mower is cranked, the enigine spits and sputters and balck smoke comes out from the side.

Did you hit something hard with your mower; like a stump or a rock? It sounds like your timing may be off. There is a key under the flywheel that is designed to break off if you hit something so that it doesn't bend the crank shaft on your mower. If that key breaks off, your mower will go out of timing and spit, sputter and backfire when you try to start it. Best of luck to you.

Just filled gas on Craftsmn 42" riding mower. Sputters, backfires and cuts off--intermittent. Water in gas? I see how to disconnect fuel line at filter. How do I clean out what's in the engine?

There really isn't much "in the engine" what you could do is take the spark plug out and turn the engine over a few times. I would suggest flusing the tank and removing the bowl off the carb and cleaning it out.
