Question about Kenmore 12.8 cu. ft. / 362 liter Chest Freezer 13312

1 Answer

Kenmore 5.1 cu.ft. chest freezer with manual defrost (model # 255.19502) is not meeting my expectations. It was replaced by Sears after its previous model, 19502/19702 crashed while still under warranty. This model appears to be even more poorly made than the previous model. After my husband died and I had fewer family events to prepare, I downsized to a small chest freezer. They are hard to find! Consumers must not be using them much? Today I defrosted this model for the first time. The hard part was not finding the plug, but the hole where water drains out the exterior. It was taking forever, and I had a small test tube brush to clean out any debris caught in the hole. It was not clear to me where the drainage hole is supposed to be? Since I never received a manual of instructions, even online, I finally turned the whole unit over so I could inspect underneath. I won't describe my opinion of the way it is put together. I finally turned it right side up and used a few towels to absorb the rest of the water. Trying to drain the water into a shallow pan only produced a few tablespoons and it was not clear to me where it was coming from, but it had to be where the hole for the plug is? However, when I had it upside down, there was silver tape over the bottom where the drainage hole might have been but I did not want to incur damage by removing the tape. Thank you for clarifying for my next defrost.

Thank you for all of the suggestions. They are appreciated! Fortunately, there was no odor associated with this process. I do not wait until a non-frost free appliance to be heavily caked with ice before defrosting. What got my attention in the first place was the blue light indicator on the bottom right exterior surface where the control knob is showing the appliance is in "all is well" mode was out. That encouraged me to defrost it. I think there is an exterior drain opening issue but it can wait for now. I let it sit 24 hrs after defrost, removing the remaining standing water, cleaning, etc., to turn it back on, and another 24 hrs before putting back items needing to kept in there. Although it is working fine, the blue light remains off. My plan for the next defrost is to run the test tube brush or pipe cleaner through the drain hole to see if I can push it to the exterior freely. Thanks everyone.

Mae sure you leave the freezer upright for 24hours before you operate as the oil from the compressor drains out and you will ruin your freezer.

Thank you; I did that. I appreciate all the suggestions and have applied most. I have not added food products yet, while I still have it in a test mode.

Try cleaning out the drain opening with a pipe cleaner. Or use a turkey baster and force hot water into the drain. Rinse with a mild bleach solution to kill any mold. Another solution is to unplug the unit and let it sit for a couple of days to defrost completely. Sometimes during the humid summer the system just gets over burdened and doesn't defrost completely. This gets progressivly worse until you get this problem.

SOURCE: Sears Freezer, Model 253 9284013-unable to locate

Your problem could be caused by a clogged drainage tube. even though you may have removed the ice it may still have a clog. my suggestion would be to take all of the contents out of your fridge and let it sit unplugged for atleast 24-48 hours with the doors open this will eliminate any left over ice that may be clogging your drain tube. if this dosent help then you may have a defrost heater problem, or possibly a defrost termination switch problem. as for the smell i know that vinegar works well for getting rid of odor. ther eis also a product you can purchase called fridge aid, it is a charcoal based air purifier and should work well.

I have a Kenmore 5 cu ft freezer that won't come on. I've checked the plug in and it works fine. Where would I start looking for the problem????

If, by plug in you mean the socket, then you need to check the fuse in the power plug next.
At the very lease there should be some light on the unit that illuminate even if it does not FREEZE.
If the compressor comes on wait to see if there is any drop in temperature. then it is possible the fuse was faulty.

Need -20 degrees Celsius...Will this brand get there?

If all is ideal maybe -10 an occationally -15 and this is F considerable coolder than -20C. ALSO fyi a chest freezer will stay at or below these temps better than an upright and especially a self defrosting model. Because a chest freezer you dont loose all the cold air when you open the door. TYhey are not made in auto matic defrost as far as I know (never have seen one but then I havent been looking for one either. An up right freezer can be manual defrost or automatic. but the cold air falls ouit every time the door is opened.

Please let em know if this helps you by giving me as high a mark as you can and thank you for using fixya.
