Rips and tears in clothes

The washer is ripping my clothes and making stress circles on them. The repair man took the machine apart and could not find anything. We have felt all the holes in plastic tub. No sharp edges were found. We felt along the top rim of the tub, no sharp edges either. We filled the tub with water and felt all the holes to see if a sharp object was stuck in one of the holes, none found. We are at a loss as what to do, the repair man says we need to take pictures of the clothes before they go in, then again when they come out. We need help, if we can not solve this issue, we will have to buy another machine. The machine is just under two years old. Buying a new machine is a lot cheaper than buying new clothes. I can take pictures of the rips and stress marks if needed. Please help.

When the service representative from Sears came to examine the same problem - tears and perforated holes in my clothing - he diagnosed the problem was not caused by the washer but rather by the dryer. The rubber ring, as best as I can recall, had become unglued and left a metal part exposed which in turn was the cause of the tears. He replaced the rubber ring and carefully sealed it. This was about a year ago, and I have had no problems since then. So you may want to have your dryer examined. I was surprised because I too thought it was the washer was the source of the problem.

The washer could be developing a transmission problem. As the washer agitates, the plastic tub is suppose to remain still. If the transmission is starting to slip, it will also try to spin during the agitate cycle, thus making the clothes become tangled under the agitator.

He5t tearing clothes

Are you sure that the clothes are not getting caught on exposed zips.

Why not load some things like towels sheets (without zips/buttons etc) in the washer and see if the issue repeats itself. You should also be able to see if there are any sharp edges or loose sharp items in the drum (mind your fingers)

Washer ripping clothes

Check the drum baffles (the paddles inside the tub) to see if one is loose and also check the front tub seal for any tears.

look inside the drum with a flashlight and look for broken or loose tumbler rib, can be fixed with epoxy, sand smooth surfaces first, let cure and use appliance paint to paint it

Boot rips

The door bellow on front loaders do wear out and require replacement. However, overloading the washer can contribute to premature wear or rips and tears due to items getting caught in the seal. If the bellow is ripped, it will require replacing or the washer will leak. The following link explains step-by-step how to install a door bellow on a Kenmore Elite front loader:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385210-replacing_door_bellow_kenmore_elite

Read through the link provided and let me know if you have any questions.

NOTE: There is another method you may try as well. Although I do not prefer this next method because these washing machines are very heavy, an alternative way of replacing the door bellow is to remove the lower toe panel and tilt the washer back at a 45 degree angle instead of removing the washer front panel. If you use this method, make sure it rests against the wall and will not tip forward. This allows the wash tub to drop down and away from the front panel and gives you access to the the rear bellow clamp through the bottom. This can save you some time.

If you would like some helpful exploded view diagrams of your washer that you can reference, you can use any of these web sites:

Just use your model number to begin your search criteria.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

Tearing clothing

Either use a more gentle cycle or the agitator may be off centered or could have bad coupler or bearings. Otherwise check the seal on top of tub to make sure it is not ripped and catching clothes

GE top load Washer ripping clothes

Solution!
GE has replaced the "boot" (the large rubber gasket at the opening of the washer) on my washer. This has fixed the problem!

Although the majority of people I spoke with at GE did not know about this, eventually I got a repair technician out here who spoke with one of the engineers. The engineer said that there was a problem with the boot causing clothing to rip. The new boot we have on our washer covers a ring of plastic just on the outside of the metal drum (the plastic rim remains stationary while the metal drum spins - this is the cause of the ripped clothing) - the old boot left this plastic ring exposed. Our washer was only 8 months old - so even if your washer is new, if your clothing is being ripped, insist that the boot be replaced for an updated version.

Good luck!
