Question about GE Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

I have a GE Microwave Space Maker XL1400. Has 2 lights. Changing one bulb it broke off. Electrician removed the remains. Taking out the second light it blew out. Replaced with new bulbs and still no light. The rest of the unit timer, on-off and the heating unit work fine. Is there a switch or fuse that blew? If so where is it? and how do I replace it? Also type # of replacement bulbs. Thanks! Joe Fields

Probably the sockets need the lamps fitting properly if they are not damaged.

SOURCE: Under Hood Light, bulb is fine (brand new)

This is a problem with the control board, which we commonly repair for $32.50. This is caused by not disconnecting the microwave from the power line when removing or installing a bulb. Feel free to e-mail me at _ for more information or visit _ for full details.

SOURCE: Lights under the microwave won't turn off

The problem is in the control board of the microwave. We repair these circuit boards nationwide for this problem for only $32.50. For more information you can do a search on Yahoo.com (not Google) for: microwave circuit repair It's a good idea to also send a copy of the technical note sheet from inside the oven when you send the assembly in for repair. This problem is caused when the bulbs are disconnected (or blow apart from) the sockets while the power is on. Power should always be disconnected before replacing bulbs, but sometimes they just fail on their own and short, causing them to "blow" like yours did. Also, be sure to avoid cheap bulbs, as we feel they have less chance of shorting and may hold up better.

SOURCE: JVM1460 surface light problem

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Details of our service and critical safety information and disassembly information is at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

Please unplug the oven first!

This is pretty common and can be a pain. It's tacked in place with hot glue, and sometimes there may have been enough moisture to corrode and seize up.

You could heat it up (hair dryer, maybe?) then use needle nose pliers. Be careful if heating so you don't burn anything.

You may be able to put the tips of needle nose pliers inside the broken bulb's socket, gently but firmly force the pliers jaws apart and then rotate the pliers to loosen it.

Another cool trick is to put a big glob of hot glue on the end of a stick or dowel, then shove it into the broken base and let it cool about 5 minutes, then turn the stick.

I like to put a little WD-40 or rust buster on the threads of the new bulb, too. Grease, Vaseline, cooking oil, or anything like that will work. Just a thin coat.

Once you get new bulbs in it, please let me know if you the lights are still not working. This is usually a problem on the control board that can be easily repaired.

How to change light bulbs in ge space maker 651b267p3

Unplug the unit and remove the outer cover. That should get you to the lamp. Be careful not to touch the high voltage area, it may still hold a charge.
