Question about Air Tools & Compressors

The air pressure won't go above 40psi on my Husky Y1010. Read suggestions it might be a broken reed valve. How do I fix that?

Hi Joanne

Here are a few things to check, you may have already checked some of these.

Electricity...Compressors will run best with full 115Vot 15AMP/Or 220V electrical supply from a circuit, over the shortest electrical cord as possible.

Air Leaks..Place your ear close to the compressor and listen for air leaking, if you hear air that is not normal and means you have to locate and repair whatever it is that is leaking.
Check the air unloader valve... The air unloader valve will blown out air when you turned off the compressor, that is normal.
But it should not have air leaking out of it all of the time. If so then it is faulty and in need of repair/replacement.

Valves...If either the intake or exaust valves fail, breaks, or fails to seat, then your compressor will run 24 hours a day and never build up to the correct pressure for shut-off.

Gaskets...Check to see if your gaskets have failed.
You could have a gasket failure between the pistons and you will never know it because it shows no external air leak.
If this situation happens then the air will only cycle between cylinders and never build up the correct air pressure.
One way to check the gasket is remove the air filter, then put your hand over the intake.
If correct then it will suck you hand against the intake.
If the valve or valves have failed then you will feel the air sucking in and blowing out.

Piston Rings and Cylinder...The piston rings could be stuck,broken, or worn and not allowing the correct pressure to build up in your tank.
A worn cylinder will also contribute to the problem of pressure build-up.
Pressure Switch...Check for air leaks at the pressure switch, it has a rubber diaphram that can fail and leak air out of the system.

your correct either the valves are worn or maybe just need cleaning as for the gaskets,idont know what part of the world your in but check out coleman on the internet or failing that ,i have maid these from gasket material suuplied from my local bearing supplier

Parts for coleman are available at www.mastertoolrepair.com your compressor is listed as L0502710. If however you like to tinker, you can make a pretty good reed valve out of aluminum can material or other (any ideas?). It is fairly easy to cut, does not last as long as factory stainless steel, but for short term, why not? Good Luck

SOURCE: I have a Husky model Y6010 air compressor.

First remove the valve using probably about a 1/2" wrench but make sure there is no pressure in the tank before you do so. check the cone and seal by loosening the valve by hand and check for debris. If there is no debris then the problem is either the pressure relief valve or weak pressure regulator but may also be a bad piston seal if it is a direct drive unit.

I believe in your model of air compressor, when you take apart the head portion to your compressor you should have four reed valves. When you have it apart, there should be two "grooves" on the bottom "plate" and two "grooves" on the top plate (where the reed valves go). the bottom part is easy (as you should already know) to set in the reed valves, but as i have also found out, as you probably have, that its a little more difficult to line up the other reed valves to thier "grooves" on the upper "plate". What you do to make sure that they stay in place is dab a little oil or grease on the reeds and place them in the upper "plate grooves" and carefully set the upper plate back in place where it goes on the compressor. It will hold them in place long enough to install it on the compressor and the small amount of grease that was there will quickly be burned up with no effect to the opperation to the machine.

Why can`t my compressor pump over ten pounds ?


You didn't state what model compressor you have so in gerneral: if you have no leaks, remove the air pump head to check the reed valves on the valve plate and the condition of the piston, piston ring(s) and cylinder. If the reed valves are broken or warped from heat they won't seal properly. If the piston ring(s) are broken or the cylinder is badly scored air will leak past the piston instead of compressing and going into the tank.

Air Compressor will only pump up to 35lbs.


The two main areas to inspect if your pressure isn't going over 35psi are the valve plate and piston/cylinder assembly. If the reed valves on the valve plate are bent, warped or broken, usually attributable to high heat, they won't seal well enough to get higher pressures. If the cylinder is badly scored or the piston and/or piston rings are damaged, usually attributable to running the pump motor with low or no oil, the seal between them won't be good enough to get the pressure any higher.

I have a husky scout 1.5 gallon air compressor. It only builds pressure to about 38 psi. It doesn't build up any more pressure.


You have either warped or broken reed valves on the valve plate or a broken piston ring and/or a damaged cylinder. Any of these will allow a small amount of air compression but as the tank gets pressure in it, it gets harder to push more air into it. If the reed valves or piston to cylinder seal is compromised more and more air will leak past the bad reed or the piston as the pressure goes up in the tank. You'll have to disassemble the air pump to find out what's damaged and needs replacing.

I have a Stanley Bostitch Oil Free Air Compressor 6.0 Gal 2.0 Hp Peak, 1.5 Hp Running 135 Psi The problem is it won't blow out air or hold the air.. How can I fix this?


Some Bostitch compessors are very unique in that they intake air from below the piston. If you cannot find an air filter, then your compessor has reed valve built into the piston that may cause problems. If you have an air filter on the head of the pump, then you have reed valves in the head. When the reed valves fail, there will be very little or no air pressure. Second problem with all compressors is the in-tank check valve. This valve allows air to enter the tank and not back-out into the compressor. Easy to check. Add air into tank with another compressor thru the quick connect and listen for air leaking around the head or pressure switch. If no leaks and pressure holds in the tank then valve ok. Examine the condition of the cylinder and piston ring by rotating the crank by hand so that the piston is at top of cylinder. Look for scratches around upper part of cylinder wall. If scratches, then replace cylinder and piston ring. If top of cylinder looks good, then suspect reed valves. Good luck

Most likely it is a leaking valve. If ether the intake or exhaust valve, but not both, leak back pressure will be low. These small compressors usually use reed valves. Try and remove the head, and check that the reeds are not bent up, and that the seat it seals against is not cut. If the reads are bent you can sometimes flip them over. You may be able to get new reads from Sears if they are bent or broken.

Compressor will run, but only builds to 20 lb pressure. Line to tank gets hot.


Very hot air is an indication of leaking /broken head gasket or reed valve. Before you remove any parts, with compressor running, check all fittings for leaks with soapy water. If no leaks, remove head and examine parts. If reed valve is broken replace as needed or do creative repair. Some valve plates have multiple reeds and only one reed is broken. Depending on your skill level, you can thread the hole and seal with piece of bolt (finished repair must not be any thicker than the plate). Good luck

Only builds up to 40psi


I am assuming you have check for line leaks, both on the compressor and your line out of the tank and the valve on the bottom of the tank is closed. This is usually a sign your valve plate is damaged, most likely a broken reed valve. If it's an oilless compressor it could be the wiper on the piston. Without knowing the model number all I can suggest is take the head plate off and check the valve plate. If all of the reeds are in place and not broken or cracked you'll have to check the piston.

Ec12 hitachi air compressor will not build pressure higher than 40psi


most likely the the reed valves are stuck or miss aligned. Worse case senerio your piston seal blew causing this not to build pressure. Read manual on how to disassemble head. to remove should be 4 bolts and your copper line, just be careful of the reed valve plates, they are thin steel that sit into the head. Put back the same way you took it apart.

I have a husky compressor, model number y6010-wk. it builds pressure slow, and shuts down right away.


Problem: My compressor is not producing the air that it once did. It takes twice as long to pump up.
Solution:
1)Turn off your compressor or disconnect the power.
2)Remove the connector tube that sends air to the tank.
3)Remove the head bolts on top of the pump.
4)Remove the head off of your pump.
5)Remove the valve plate off of your pump. It may be a one piece or a 2 piece design.
6)Inspect the valve plate for broken reed valves or broken gaskets above or below the valve plate.

WILL NOT BUILD PRESSURE


Many craftsman compressor are built by champbell hausfeld using a dry type of cylinder and piston (no oil, no crankcase). If dry type, check for worn cylinder and piston ring. Pieces of the vinyl ring can jamb between the reed valves in the head causing air to escape from the intake. If your compressor has a crankcase and oil, check for broken reed valves in head. Spray soap solution on hoses, checkvalve, drainvalve, and fittings to check for leaks. Most likely problem is reed valves broken or open.
