Some heaters are equipped with a safety switch that removes power if it is tipped. The switch may not have reset or it may be necessary to try turning the heater in various ways to get it to reset. There is a possibility that the tipover switch may have acted only once, then failed.

When heat turned on it trips out

Heaters tend to have safety features to make sure they don't start fires. Depending on the particulars of your heater, some things to consider:
  1. Most heaters have a tip sensor, so that they'll turn off if they are tipped over. If it's tipped right now, put it level and see if that helps. you might also try tipping it (while unplugged) through a wide range of angles, see if you can hear a switch engaging/disengaging, or something like a pendulum making contact with a wall. If that switch is stuck or mis-aligned, that may be the issue.
  2. If the heater has a fan to blow air in the room, see if the inlet side of the fan is clogged with dust bunnies or an inadvertently dropped rag. Or if it's been backed against something that may be blocking the inlet. No air going through to move heat away is an overheat danger and possible lock-out.
  3. If the heater has a pivot to turn the outlet side to side, see if it is impeded or blocked. If the pivot is engaged and the swinging head hits something, it can tip the heater over. Run into something, stop moving, probably shut off the heater.
  4. Heater usually has some sort of thermostat, or level-of-heat setting. if this sensor is defective, it may think that the system is too hot, and shut the system off. Many systems like this will be rigged to shut off if the sensor fails or goes open circuit, so that a defective or broken temp sensor doesn't just register as 'really cold, ramp up the heat power' and cause a fire.
Hope this is useful to you!

Find tip-over switch on Lakewood Heater

lakewood makes several styles of heaters,if it is the steam looking version,i don't think it has a tip over switch, because it cant start a fire...the tip over switch version has the counter balance switch in the casing under the coil and fan area..to check to see if it is working ,just turn it on and tip it over ,try it a couple of directions,if it shuts off it works.its not a thermocouple...

The timer will only turn off the water heater, it will not turn it on. What happened?

Do you have both screws to tip the unit off. If not they are available at your local hardware store or big box store. First take a closer look around if two are not on there, it may have come loose or is otherwise not mounted correctly to tip the heater back on...

My patton prh11 heater keeps acting like its going to come on for maybe about a minute or so and then actually comes on. It just keeps turning on and off constantly. Maybe about 15 times in a minute.

These heaters all have safety devises in them some for tip over and all for over heating. Your problem sounds as if it has a bad over heating sensor. These will have two wires one in one out, it is usually a positive wire. When they sense that the heater is to hot it shuts it down upon cooling it allows the heater to turn back on. The tip switch does the same if upright it turns on if tipped it turns it off. They are mechanical and thermal switches and they do go bad. These can be jumped out to trouble shoot the problem but I would not run it with out these safety devices in it.

The heater you have is not sold by RTA INTERNATIONAL. We are the distributor for GARDENSUN patio heaters. From what you say, I would think you have a pressure problem or a bad thermocouple. Check all your fittings by spraying them with soapy water. Be sure you turn on your gas to check.

Check the tip of your thermocouple. Be sure the tip is tapered and not burned through on the tip. If it is, you need a new thermocouple.
