I need to tighten belt for the mower deck, how is that done? it is a 2004 craftsman 17.5HP 42 " deck. Can you help me

Each of the pulleys on top of the deck should have tensioners. These tensioners are usually the type which have a bolt for you to tighten while attached to the pulley. While you tighten the bolt, the pulley puts tension on the belt.

The choke won't stay out when I pull it. When I pull it all the way out, the cable seems to pull it back in.

Either the tension adjustment is not correct on the cable or someone has "lubricated" the cable. Never apply any type of lubricant to this cable. It depends on friction to hold it in position.

The tension or friction is adjustable. If you look at the cable closely where it comes through the bracket that holds it, you'll see a serated plastic nut and a metal nut. The metal nut holds the entire cable in the bracket. The serated nut adjust the tension on the cable. By turning the nut clockwise, you increase the tension making the cable stay where it's put. Counterclockwise makes the cable move more freely. Carefully tighten the serated nut to get the tension you need.

You cable may already be damaged too. In the previous paragraph, I said to "carefully" tighten the serated nut. If you try to tighten the nut too much, the plastic housing at the knob will break. Once this happens, you must replace the cable in order to get it to work correctly.
