Question about Midland Weather/Hazard Radio with SAME Local Alerts

1 Answer

I have a HH54 portable weather radio, the batteries went dead. The charging station light is not coming on, so it is not charging. I bought a new charging adapter, plugged it in and put the radio into the docking station. The charging lights just comes on for a split second and dims out. I let it set overnight and does not charge up the batteries. My next guess is the rechargeable battery pack is shorted out?

SOURCE: Hi! I've been under 4 different tornado warnings

Do you hear a broadcast when you hit the Weather/Snooze button? Is the transmitter that you have programmed broadcasting? NWS does have downtime at the various transmitters and these will be listed at weather.gov. (Click on the map for your region and look at the links in the News of the Day section.) If the signal is being broadcast, try changing where you have the radio placed until you hear the broadcast come through clearly. With one weather radio, I found that I had a better chance of getting the NWS alerts from a different tower than the one listed for my county. My location is closer to this other transmitter. See http://www.weather.gov/nwr/Maps/ for where the transmitters are located in various states. Click on your state for your local map. Check the map for adjacent states if you are near a state border.

Do you have an external antenna? Check that it is properly connected. If not, consider adding one positioned to get a better signal for the nearest transmitter to your location. (With an external antenna, we can get one of several transmitters on that weather radio. This means that we can easily switch when the best transmitter is down, as well.) See www.midlandradio.com to see the antenna that they recommend - which should be placed in a window. This is the 18-259W VHF Through-glass antenna.

Has your radio been picking up the weekly and monthly tests before this? These only give a text message not an alert tone with this Weather Radio. The alert will reset within 6 hours.

Did you set the alarm to Display alerts? This is the silent alarm mode - Tone or Voice would give an audible alert. Check this by pressing Menu then use the Up arrow until you see Alt Type. Press Select and use the Up arrow and then scroll through the options. Press Select to set your choice and then press Menu to exit the menu. Check the volume setting if you have the alarm set for tone or voice.

I hope one of these items help. Otherwise, contact Midland for support. They charge $45 to fix out of warranty weather radios plus a $7.50 shipping and handling charge for any repair. The S&H charge is not required in all states. http://www.midlandradio.com/Resource_/OwnerManual/122/WR-100B.pdf is the direct link to the manual and has the Service details. The direct link to the pdf may not work; you can find this via Google or at the Midland site.

(btw, my household had one weather radio that continuously would lose the ability to hear the test alerts even when placed in a spot that usually got the best reception for the unit. Since that one also did not respond to S.A.M.E. codes properly, we replaced it and put it in our workshop where the intermittent signal loss wouldn't always be critical. Without an external antenna, positioning the radio for best signal took walking around the house many times. Even with the external antenna, it took a while to find the best placement for the antenna.)

SOURCE: my weather radio was working

Not sure what the issue might be but here is the manual. look at page 11 for troubleshooting. The tower in your area may be out due to the storms.

Does the radio turn on when you turn ignition. If not then the Battery
has bad cell. Replace battery. Battery's in Olds Aurora 98 typically
get a very long life. 6 years . After 6 I recommend replacing battery
If your car turns what does your battery read. If it's reading only 12 V
with eng. going, your alternator has gone out. If battery is new then you'll need to find another reason your battery is draining charge.

Set button doesn't work.

I'm unclear, are you saying that if you press the button it lights up or that pressing the button has no effect. Remove battery and adapter and try again, if pressing button does nothing at all the button may be faulty. The only way to prove the button is faulty is to internally short the switch for 5 secs, you will have to dismantle to do that. I suggest you contact:

Battery drained dead in ocld weather

Could be both batteries went bad.
1) I would take battery back to where you bought it and have them test.
2) Check, or have someone check, that battery power is not being used when the key is off and the car is not being used in any way. There will be a slight trickle of power use, but nothing that would wear the battery down in less than 3-4 weeks.

Home Depot recalled all of them for this reason. Great radio, just use reachable batteries instead of the charger stand. The stand and OEM battery is the problem. I kept mine and use rechargeable's instead.

Battery charge

the battery is dead. that happened to me and i had 3 choices: 1)buy a new dvd player 2)buy a new recharable battery or 3)keep the portable plugged to the wall while i watch movies. i chose number 3 because i usually just use it at places plugs are available. but yeah, the battery is dead.
