Question about Sony MDS-E10 Mini Disc Player

2 Answers

My MDS-E10 Has Been Having Problems Lately. I Own Hundreds Of Mini Discs That I Have Recorded Music On Several Years Ago. Everything That I Have Recorded On These Mini Discs (Years Ago) Play Fine With No Problem. I Have Recently Been Transferring The Audio From These Mini Discs Onto CD-R's Using My Sony CDR-W33 To Back Up All My Pre-Recorded Audio So I Can Erase The Mini Discs To Record New Material On Them. So, The Last 8-10 MD's That I Have Erased, I Have Tried Recording New Audio On Them And The Recording Process Seems To Work Fine Until I Go To Play The Newly Recorded Audio Back. It Shows The Track Numbers And The Time Of Each Track And Total Track & Full Disc Time On The Display (TOC) But, It Will Not Play Anything Back. (Before I Erased The Disc It Played Fine All The Way Through Like Normal) But, With New Recordings It Won't Playback At All. I Try Going To The Next Track And Still Nothing. So, I Press Stop And Then Eject The Disc (The Unit Writes The New TOC Before Ejecting The Disc Like Normal) When I Insert The Mini Disc Back Into The Player It Reads Blank Disc. WTF? It Only Does That To New Recordings. I Have Tried Using A Mini Disc Head Cleaner Several Times But That Still Doesn't Fix The Problem. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!

Hi there is nothing to do by yourself. you need to take your md player to the next authorized service. seems the optical device that reads the discs has worn out, compareable to turntables you need to change the `needle` ;)

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

SOURCE: Spontaneous MD erasure

Well, depending how the content was recorded, there may be a slim chance to recover the audio. To me it looks like TOC was not written successfully, effectively deleting the TOC.
You can try TOC cloning with this 'blank' MD using another MD player, but your track markers will be lost during the cloning. If it works, at best you will end up with ONE long track. Then you can edit and reset your track markers.

It may be also be a good idea, to try the JE440 carefully with junk content to make sure it still works ok when writing TOC. You may have an intermittent problem too. I'd be very careful editing MD in this unit until it has been confirmed the TOC writing works ok. You may want to check the over-write head assembly and the cable that connects it. Sometimes these cables develop hairline cracks causing intermittend write action.

Check out www.minidisc.org forum for TOC cloning.

Good luck recovering your audio.

SOURCE: jb 940 md player. Recording a full disc, always

When you get done recording, do you wait until the "TOC" light stops flashing? If you cut off power before the Table Of Contents is written, then it can't find all your music. Even if you eject, it should still flash a little red TOC or UPDATE before it spits the disc out. Check for that. okay?

Not recording anymore

After you press the 'record' button the Minidisc unit is still in "pause mode" - you can hear the music and see the meters move, but notice that the time isn't moving until you press "Play" - then it will start recording. Is the time changing when you go to play it back? You might have left the MD in 'pause' perhaps?

MDS-E10 failed to record

If you recorded a disc and then the deck saved it; then you cannot play it is probably a bad mechanism. When I buy old decks I check them by inserting and recording a disc then ejecting it. If it will then not play when reloaded the deck is bad. Often the decks say they are saving but are damaged and cannot so this is the only way to know for certain.

MDS-E10 will not eject disc

The lower end mechanism were full of problems after about a year of use. The unit needs to go to an appropriate Technician- NOT Sony as they will just replace the mechanism if they even work on it and it will be the same cost of a new unit. The mechanism you have needs lubrication and a limiting resistor placed in line with motor to not break plastic parts.

I've had similar problems with older Pioneer displays, they do wear out in time. What worked for me was placing a shim made from a cable tie near the ribbon cable going to the display moving the cable into a better position.
This may not work for you, the display may be near failing due to old age I'm sorry to say.

Minidisk systems encode music diffferently than CD's do. The instruction manual for your model can be found at http://www.minidisc.org/sony_mdse10_manual.pdf you will need to reference page 18 for instructions and trouble shooting.

Can a MDS JE330 play minidiscs recorded by a "hi md" player? most md-players can not.

No. Only Hi-MD players/recorders can play Hi-MD's. They're a later and totally different technical specification. The discs may look superficially similar but it's like trying to play a Blu-Ray disc on a CD player.

What if any are the problems?

The only problem is highly compressed music. Discs are impossible to find these days. other than that, it's basically the same as MP3 or WAV. Hope this helps

Does he have a pre-recorded MiniDisc that he can try it with? It could be that a cable wormed its way loose, or the laser took a dump during the shipping. Hard to tell. Try the pre-recorded disc first, then you might end-up having it back.

MDS-E10 Problems loading and ejecting discs

Hi, its probably way too late to give this solution but there is a ribbon cable that runs from the main board onto the display board that causes this problem. Its very accessable from the top and all you have to do is pull it out clean the contacts and re-seat it. This will resolve all sorts of communications issues with the display and buttons.
