Question about Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64BIT Operating System Software OEM DVD

Laptop can not get online using WiFi or Lan. Tried to reconfig ip address. Shows router but says there is internet connection. Did what most people would try, removed the Network Device and re installed the Windows 7 Drivers. This did not help.

Rebuild the winsock. Start -> type CMD and right click on cmd.exe and run as administrator. Youll come to a black screen with white letters. type netsh winsock reset and hit enter. Restart the computer and try again. If this works then you have spyware on you computer.

you might have an issue with DNS servername,or you have static ip configured on your laptop.
try the follow:
1. go to control panel and click on Network Connections
2. right click on the Wireless connection and select "Properties"
3. select TCP/IP and click "Properties"
4.make sure it is set to:
a. Obtain an IP address automatically
b. Obtain DNS server address automatically.

if this is already the case, try to ask people around you for their DNS servernames (or any local DNS server they know about)- and enter it here in the "preferred DNS server and alternate DNS server.

Go into componant services and turn them all on, it's comman with vista to have this happen when using certain optimizing and anti virus programs, like spybot. Your network may have been turned off. Also just try using the wizard to establish a new connection instead of trying to fix the one you are troubleshooting, I had a similar problem ith an HP laptop and vista, and it had some services stopped or set to manual, the reset of the services fixed it.

Try assigning your laptop a static IP. To do this in Windows:

  • Open Windows Start menu.
  • Open Control Panel.
  • Classic view: Open Network Connections
    Category view: Select Network and Internet Connections, and thenNetwork Connections.
  • Double-click on your active LAN or Internet connection.
  • Click Properties
  • In the General tab, highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item, and clickProperties.
  • In the General tab, click Use the following IP address, and enter: - IP address. The static IP address you want to assign to this computer (try 192.168.1.110 to start). - Subnet mask. Subnet mask used by your router (try 255.255.255.0 to start). - Default gateway. IP address of your router's default gateway (try 192.168.1.1 to start).
  • In Use the following DNS server addresses, enter all the IP addressses for the DNS servers your router uses (or you can try your router's address, probably 192.168.1.1).

Verify that you haven't manually set the IP address of the desktop machine to an IP address that conflicts with another device on your network.
If this is the case, change the network settings to use Automatic or DHCP IP address assignment.
If this doesn't fix the issue, I suggest trying a different network card than the QHM8100R3D to see if that addresses the issue.

For that you need to check WAN settings and also make sure local ip settings gateway should be your router ip address. Make sure WAN settings are fine connect internet cable to WAN port of router. Then check. You can configure router with below method. Connect your router to computer with ethernet cable then you can access it with following default link. http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.15.1 or http://192.168.2.1 If you are not able to access it with above ip then check your computers ip address gateway ip is your router ip try with it. Then it ask for user name and password. Type user as "admin" and password as "admin" or "password" or blank. Then you can see configuration page of router. Then configure wan settings and lan settings enable wireless if you want to use wifi Then save settings and restart router Then connect cable from internet service provider to WAN port of router and connect ethenet lan cable from computer to lan port of router. . Your router has an lan address or IP. Something like 192.168.1.1. This is what you must connect to. Each of the machines you want to connect must have (in this example) an IP number between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.225. As long as your machines all have a unique IP they should all connect to your router. Your modem will have a gateway and typically this will be something like 10.0.0.1. So setup for one machine may look like this [192.168.1.3 subnet 255.255.255.0

To find these setting, click on your lan connection, select "properties" and choose "Internet Protocol TCP/IP". Here you will see these settings. Your router guide will give you these settings, make sure you get them from your router guide.

your laptop is able to go online using WI-FI.
desktop is connected to theb router but not able to go online. Do you see the port light on the router ?
check the Ip address on the computer. Check if there is any static IP address on the computer.

Check this Tip for an overview
  1. Connect your PC to your router using LAN Cable: be sure you can browse internet
  2. If you cannot browse check router config with your ISP
  3. Connect to your router using IP address you find for gateway in Network status
  4. Configure your router wireless section to match with your PC card
  5. Start removing security, broadcast radio signal, create a simple SSID as network name
  6. Check if router network is seen by your PC card (when you disconnect the LAN cable and activate the wireless card)
  7. If connection is established ( near the router) try different location
  8. Reconnect cable and reconfig adding security protocol (WPA-PSK recommended) use parameters compatible with your lan card

if you can connect to the internet when you connect the pc to whe lan port , then your internet connection is ok and all you need to set is the wireless settings in the router.
connect the pc to the router with a cable .
then , Start-> Run-> type cmd-> ok-> type ipconfig-> enter-> look on the default gateway address -> type the numbers of the default gateway in the address line in your internet explorer-> there you should check , enable and or change the wireless settings.

the router will give you a private address , that is the functionality of the router, the problem is not with your connection, try to upgrade the latest firmware inthe router and reconfig the router in a pppoe mode that will fix your problem..

Problems with home networking between desktop running XP (wired) and laptop running Vista (wireless), using DSL broadband (PPPoE) internet connection, Westell 6100 modem/router & Linksys Wireless-G WR


Hi MissGarbs,

Based on your post and description, it would seem that your problem is caused by:
1. having 2 routers on the same system;
2. Both routers performs DHCP server function; and
3. Both routers use 192.168.1.1 as default IP Add.

Your problems are:
a. laptop has no internet access only local network; and
b. you cannot access the router to make changes.

A possible solution. Pls back up your configurations first before attempting changes (or log them down somewhere so if needed you can revert back).

A. Power off and remove all connections to the LinkSys WRT54GS, set it aside for the moment. The objective is to verify/establish Internet connection.

Connect your desktop PC via LAN cable to the Westell 6100. Boot your desktop PC, right click on the networking icon bottom right side in your system tray, click on Status, click on Properties button, highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click on properties button (mid right):
tick "Use the following IP address"
Enter values as shown below -
IP address: 192.168.1.4
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS servers: 68.238.0.12 & 68.238.112.12
click on OK, OK, Close.

Power on the Westell 6100, give it time to sync and connect to your Verison. .In the desktop PC, open a browser. Verify that your desktop have access to the Internet, do it on a few sites. Should you have no internet access, pls seek assistance from Verizon tech support. You need not mention the LinkSys nor the laptop since you have as of the moment a single PC attached directly to the Westell 6100.

If it is all green & go, power up your laptop and boot to Windows. Remove the LAN cable at the back of your desktop and connect it to the laptop's networking port. Do the same configuration ("Use the following IP address") to the networking/LAN card of your laptop.
Enter values as shown below -
IP address: 192.168.1.5
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS servers: 68.238.0.12 & 68.238.112.12

In the laptop open a browser. Verify that your laptop have access to the Internet, do it on a few sites. Should you have no internet access, pls seek assistance from Verizon tech support again. You need not mention the LinkSys nor the desktop since you have as of the moment a single laptop attached directly to the Westell 6100. (This is of course assuming that your laptop has a networking port)

If both the desktop PC and the laptop can now connect albeit individually to the Internet, the LinkSys may now be inserted into the system.

B. Disconnect the LAN connection of the laptop to the Westel 6100 and connect it to one of the 4 LAN ports at the rear of the WRT54GS; do the same with the desktop (use another LAN cable). The LinkSys for the moment need not be connected to the Westell. So in effect you have 2 units connected to the WRT54GS. Do a hard reset on the WRT54GS, with the power on, press on the small reset button at the rear of the unit. Allow it to reinitialize. Open browsers to both laptop and desktop. Type "192.168.1.1", password is "admin" and the username is blank, verify that you can open the LinkSys Web Configuration Utility. On either the laptop or the PC desktop (assuming both can access the same page), on the setup page of the LinkSys Config, change your Internet Connection Type to "Static IP",
Internet IP Address 192.168.1.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS servers: 68.238.0.12 & 68.238.112.12

Scroll down to Network Setup,
Change IP Address to 192.168.1.3
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Disable the DHCP Server (You can have at any given time only 1 instance of a DHCP server, either from the LinkSys or the Westell, but you can also have NO DHCP server if you are using static addresses.)

Click on Save Settings at the bottom, exit, and close. Verify that the LinkSys can be accessed from any of your browsers by typing "192.168.1.3", if no; go through the procedure again very carefully. If yes, proceed to change the Default Gateway of both the laptop and desktop PC from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.3, all other configurations stand.

In your laptop, right click on the WiFi networking icon (bottom right of System Tray). Click on Status, click on Properties button, highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click on properties button (mid right):
tick "Use the following IP address"
Enter values as shown below -
IP address: 192.168.1.6
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.3
DNS servers: 68.238.0.12 & 68.238.112.12
click on OK, OK, Close.

Verify that you can access/connect/ping 192.168.3; 192.168.4; 192.168.1.5; and/or 192.168.1.6 from either the laptop or desktop.

If yes, we can now connect the LinkSys WRT54GS to the Westell 6100. Remove the LAN cable attached to your laptop. Verify that you can still access/connect/ping 192.168.3; 192.168.4; 192.168.1.5; and/or 192.168.1.6 from the laptop even without the LAN cable since you are now connected via WiFi.

If yes, connect that LAN cable to the Westell 6100 LAN port, move the other end from 1 of the WRT54GS ‘ 4 LAN ports to the WAN likewise at the rear of the LinkSys.

Verify that you can access the Internet from either computer. At this moment, you have not assigned a security method (WEP, WPA, MAC Filter). Your choice as to what security you want implemented but offhand I would suggest the simplest, MAC Filter since any other would affect speed of your connection.

Additionally, you may want to enhance you browser connection. In Mozilla, click on Tools, Options, Advanced tab, Network tab, Settings button, tick "Auto-detect proxy settings for this connection, OK, OK;
In IE, Tools, Internet Options, Connections tab, LAN settings button, check "Automatically detect settings", OK, Advance tab, check Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections.
In Opera, Tools, Preferences, Advanced tab, Network, Proxy server buttons, check "Enable HTTP 1.1 for proxy, OK, OK.

Normally (and perhaps easier for some) would be using the DHCP and not using static. Experience has shown me that static proves to be more stable especially if WiFi is concerned and in your case, only 2 PCs.
