Question about Water Heaters

Open Question

The storage heaters have scorch marks around all the vents. Thay are also too hot to safely touch. It is now nearly 4 years since installation and I am aware they only have a 2 year guarentee. However the problem developed last year but my husband was seriously unwell and has since died so the issue kind of got lost in all the other stuff. The supplier and the electrician who installed them has contacted Dimplex with little acceptable result. Initial contact in August followed up by emails and calls from the 1/9/2013 resulted in a communication from a Ms Byles on the 8/10/2013. I assume that something has gone wrong with the thermostat and that the scorching is not just to do with perfumed room fresheners. Old storage heaters unnafected. Concerned two dodgy batches of product, is it throwing good money after bad to have them stripped dow?

SOURCE: Hot water does not last long.

probably has a bad heating element. May be a little limed up also. Drain the heater and replace the elements. Take a special tool to remove and replace the elements. ( fairly cheap) You can probably get the elements and parts at a good hardware store. The people at the store probably will explain to you how to replace them. Feedback please if this was of help

SOURCE: rheem power vent motor doesn't shut off

There could be blockage in your water heaters venting on the outside of the home. It sound like the high limit switch has been tripped. Try unplugging the tank and plugging it back in. this will reset the tank. if the problem persists you will want to call your provider for service.

SOURCE: I have an electric Hot water heater with two

Replace the melted part.

If tank is popping breaker, then the melted part has a short circuit.

When replacing thermostats, I usually replace both of them
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermostat-on-electric-water-heater.html

There are 5 basic parts to electric water heater.
Electricity to water heater.
Upper thermostat
Upper element
Lower thermostat
Lower element
It sounds like electricity is good.
Elements are probably good if just replaced, but one of them could have a short.
Thermostat is melted, so replace it and see if it restores hot water.
If not, then take 40 minutes and do complete troubleshoot as shown in link above.

What is the minimum vertical vent distant from top of water heater to top of cap. Water heater is stand alone outside furnishing water for military force provider showers unit.

Generally 40 feet for ordinary atmospheric-vented household water heater...
Straight run to roof.
Atmospheric means no power vent... just hot air drafting upwards
Google search: gas vent height code

Atmospheric venting code depends on 4 basic factors:
Diameter of vent--- bigger vent, more draft
How many water heaters are connected to same vent
BTU per hour rating of water heater-- the more gas that is burned per hour, the bigger the vent needs to be
How straight the pipe is -- are there any horizontal or lateral runs
http://www.ameri-vent.com/files/assets/files/1366372183_Sizing26ApplicationGuide1.pdf

http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Bosch_Checking_the_draft.pdf
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/checking-the-draft2.pdf

Other factors can include
-wind conditions... higher wind across top of vent pipe on roof can reduce draft, and cause downdraft that blows deadly CO into same room as water heater
-vent termination near high walls, trees, high roof peak etc will reduce draft or cause downdraft
-amount of incoming air supply... if water heater is inside a closed room, then there is no air to draft up the pipe, burner will shut down or burn lazy yellow instead of clear blue
-stuff piled up around water heater that obstructs air intake
-dirty air intake screen that reduces air intake
-vent fans inside same room as water heater that pull air down the vent and cause reduction in water heater draft
-generally elbows reduce draft by 10%
-vent cannot terminate near any window door or air intake for another gas appliance
-bird build nest on top of vent pipe after vent termination falls off
-highly acidic gas by-product causes large amount of condensation inside pipe that burns hole in pipe or drips down and damages combustion parts...blower and inline condensate trap and drain might be required
-multiple water heaters installed on same vent line.

Need a blanket for Rheem Water Heater model #22VRP75.

You have 75 gallon gas water heater.
I install water heater insulation 3 ways:
1) Easiest: buy ready-made blanket from Lowes and use duct tape
2) Harder: wrap heater in ordinary fiberglass insulation and use tie wire
3) Hardest: Build a box out of blue styrafoam >> leaving room for air intake for gas water heater, and space around vent pipe

Instructions for gas water heater:
Do not cover TP valve.
No insulation is put over gas valve or air intake.
No insulation touches vent pipe.
Remember the gas water heater has to breathe air into the burner, and aftter combustion takes blace, hot gases escape so extra space is left around hot vent pipe to avoid fire.

Find age of Rheem: look at 3rd and 4th digit of serial number, for example 06 was manufactured in 2006.

My water heater is leaking cold water from the bottom. How do I fix it? its a Richmond miser. Model # 8v30-1

First shut off power then remove acess cover and carefully move insulation out of the way so you can see around elements.Check to see if leak is coming from around element. If it is determine what type of element you have. Either screw in or bolted in. Both have thick rubber gaskets that can be replaced by draing water heater and removing element then install new gasket and reinstall element.
To drain heater shut off valve on incoming cold water supply line ,make sure electric power is off. Connect drain hose to drain valve and put other end to floor drain or sump basin. You can open faucet on hot side near by to prevent vacumn and drain. If you have screw in type disconnect wires, marking them for reattachment, then use large open end wrench or pipe wrench on hex section of element and turn to left to remove. If you have bolt in element spray bolts with wd-40 or similar and carefully loosen bolts then disconnect wires and remove element.install new gasket and reverse to reinstall. I would recommend that you replace elements at this time if you are sure this was the source of the leak.
If you don't think it's leaking around elements then check fitting on both water lines to water heater to be sure they are not leaking and seeping down thru insulation and leaking out of the bottom of heater. Next check around drain valve for leak and if it's leaking you can try tightening it a little or replace it with 3/4 x2 brass nipple and 3/4 inch female iron pipe boiler drain. Use teflon tape or pipe joint compound on all threaded connections.
After you have eliminated all other sources for leak then it is probably the tank itself. If it is less then six years old the tank should still be covered under warrenty. Most warrenties will give you a new heater but installation will not be covered unless you have extended service coverage.
I hope this helps you some. Thank you

Water heater is building pressure in the boiler

Hi, W/D here.

The pressure should be relieved by your PRD (pressure relief device) located on the side of your water heater near the top. It's main purpose is to prevent a water heater explosion.

An inoperable PRD is not a job I'd put off for even one second. If I couldn't work the job right now, at the very lease I'd get the heat off of it, and vent the pressure off at a faucet.

What's important to remember about these devices is that they are for pressure and thermal relief. If there is any doubt that either function is compromised, it should be replaced. Isolate the heat source to the water heater (electricity or gas), vent the hot water at a bathtub, isolate the water inlet connection Drain the heater, taking an air bleed (vent) at one of your hot water faucets. You don't have to drain it completely, just make sure that the water level is below the PRD and that the boiler is isolated and vented as described.

In some cases, minor plumbing modifications are required to get the PRD discharge to the outside or the pan.

If you have any doubts about your ability to perform this job safely, you should call a plumber.

Work carefully and safely. --W/D--

Our second unit just failed and needs a new controller more money

The only Bosch tankless I have ever touched have been the 3 I have taken out and replaced with Rinnai. I think Bosch/Paloma/etc. have two problems:

1. They do not properly certify technicians before allowing them to install these units.

2. Their product is mediocre at best.

The biggest problem I've seen is that people don't vent them properly. The last one I pulled out had a combined vent length of 55'. 55 FEET! Absurd!
The units was condensing so much inside the vent that it washed out 2 gas control valves in ONE YEAR.

Buy Rinnai, buy Takagi, buy Noritz....maybe even a Navien (new player...time will tell)
+
Factory certified technicians, preferably equipped to do the gas & plumbing without having to sub it out.
=
Years of trouble-free hot water.

Good Luck.

Gas water heater pilot goes out only on very hot days

It sounds more like the pilot is being blown out by drafting. If there is any open shielding at or below the pilot light line , it is very possible for it to blow out.Hold a tissue between your fingers and ck for drafts around the burner and pilot area. If it's the case, The drafting needs blocking.the exhaust will still exhaust because of the heat it generates and confined location in the combustion chamber. Good Luck.
