when I try to sew with the machine, the stitches don't come out normal looking. They look like a big not of thread on the back side.

Make sure you have threaded the machine properly and make sure the presser foot is up when you thread the machine so the thread goes in between the tensions discs, top tension should be about 5 but may vary slightly, make sure you have the bobbin in the bobbin case the correct way round, the thread should just pull through the spring with some resistence.
