How do I put a new pull rope on my 5hp MTD Chipper?

pull the starter cover pull rope out to length lock the housing the rope is in, in place with a tool pull out rope. reinsert new rope into retaining hoe tie a not and cut off excess rope. put ropr through handle hole reattach handle and remove tool you used to hold the rope housing. This is if your spring and starter assembly are ok. Or you could stop being a cheap and let a shop do it for 5 minutes labor.

Installing a spring in an MS240 Stihl chain saw

I have not worked on you type saw. I have put new starter springs in other saws. One end of the spring fits into the housing and the other in the pulley. Once you have that done there should be a notch in the pulley that you put the rope into that will allow the spring to be wound up without taking up the rope. It is a trial error problem now. If the spring is wound too tight you will not get full rope travel. If it is too loose tilt will not pull the rope in fully.

How does the recoil spring,waher,2 hairpins pins, dog footand rope pulley get reassembeled?

the rope rotor will go on first, then the washer goes on, put the dogs in then put the spring on. insert the rope into the rotor, wind it up, feed the rope through the starter cover, carefully allow the rotor to wind in the rope a ways then put the handle on.

Homelite chain saw XL925 cord pull too hard but if you remove the spark plug then it pulls OK.

I have a Homelite XL and was having problems with rope pulling from difficult to unable to pull rope while trying to start saw. I removed the muffler, squirted some WD40 through the exhaust port ABOVE and BELOW the piston compression ring. Then pulled the rope about 20 times without spark plug to fully lubricate the piston and cylinder. Left it till the next day, pulled it through about 20 more times, put the spark plug back in,and it works well now. Guess it was just gummed-up a little and the lubrication freed it.

Pull cord will not rewind

  • 1

Turn the Homelite chainsaw so that the bar and chain are laying flat and the starter cover is facing up. Loosen the four starter cover screws by unscrewing them counterclockwise with the screwdriver.

  • 2

Take the starter cover off of the engine. Turn the starter cover over to work on the pull starter. Pull the rope out about 6 to 8 inches.

  • 3

Twist a loop into the end of the rope. Insert the intersection of the two ropes into the notch on the upper flange of the pulley. Rotate the loop back and forth until you notice the recoil spring has disengaged. Unwind the rope from the pulley. Cut off any old rope if you need to replace it with a new rope.

  • 4

Unscrew the screw holding the pulley to the starter cover using the screwdriver. Take the pulley off the starter cover. Turn the pulley over and remove the recoil spring cassette from inside the pulley.

  • 5

Inspect the spring inside the cassette to see if it is damaged or overstretched. Replace the recoil spring cassette if it is broken. Lubricate the post on the starter cover using about a dime-sized amount of engine grease.

  • 6

Put the recoil spring cassette back into the pulley. Set the pulley onto the starter cover and tighten the screw down with the screwdriver. Wind the starter rope back around the pulley in a clockwise direction.

  • 7

Leave about 6 to 8 inches of rope unwound. Form another loop at the end and insert the loop into the notch on the pulley. Rotate the loop back and forth until you notice the tension is set on the recoil spring.

  • 8

Remove the loop and place the starter cover back over the engine. Pull the rope out 6 inches and tighten the starter cover's screws using the screwdriver. Release the rope and it should automatically retract

I havea 16 inch Homelite chain saw , I 've had it for about 25 years.I cannot not pull the starting rope. If I take out the spark plug ,it pulls with no effort.I have taken the starting rope cover off and...

If someone put the wrong sparkplug in the saw it would do the same thing. The plug threads could be too long and when the piston comes up it hits the plug and stopps. If the electrodes on the new plug extend farther out of the sparkplug the piston will come up and hit it and the engine will not turn.

Homelite model No. 10609. 1H2100076 My pull rope won't recoil.

Not that i know of, take the cover off and rewind by hand, use greese on the coil and pull the rope in and out, if the rope doesnt recoil you are going to need a new pull start assembly

Pull cord on chain saw will not retract.

Most of the rancher models are easy to look at. Take the four screws off that hold the starter cover on.When off have a look to see if the pulley is ok or one of the starter dogs(pawls) is jamed . If dogs ok take the screw out of the centre of pulley and remove it ,check for spring tension. if there is just be carful to leave sring in housing. look at spring if broken or out of shape renew it and rope.check for cracks in pulley. When renewing spring and rope get correct rope length and diameter. don't over tension new spring. hop this helps
