I love stainless steel appliances and have a lot of them at home. But, it is trouble cleaning them. They look really bad if they are not kept clean regularly. How can I get rid of the stains and marks on stainless steel for a longer period of time?

I had the same stain and streak problem with a stainless steel dish washer and stove. The streaks going down the dishwasher door were very noticeable and ugly, to the point that we were considering buying a new washer. But then, after trying Windex (Martha Stewart's solution to the problem, which helped a little bit) and vinegar, which did nothing, I decided that, after all, it is metal, so why not use a paste metal polish. I tried the side of the dish washer door to see if the polish would harm the finish. It did not. It looked great, so I polished the whole door, one section at a time. To get any residue off, I used a spray bottle of water with a drop of Dawn soap in it and wiped the door down with a terry cloth towel. Then I did the stove front and lower drawer with the same amazing results; both appliances look brand new. My wife was shocked at the results. Gorgeous!

The stove has a glass cook top, and spilled food was cooked on to it. I used a razor blade to scrape off the worst places and then used the same metal polish to polish the glass and remove the remaining stains. Now, it too looks new.

I used Wenol brand metal polish in the orange tube that I got from an auto parts store. Possibly big box stores sell it. Any very fine grit polish should work. Another product I have used with good success for glass top ranges is Cook Top (R) Cleaning Cream. You can get this from Kitchen Aid by calling 800-422-1230. Ask for part number 9780196.

When it comes to stainless steel, regular cleaning is definitely required. But, yes you can reduce the frequency of cleaning required by simply using an appropriate cleaner to do so. Make sure that the cleaner you use would not harm the metal. I personally use Innopolish B520 for cleaning stainless steel. You could try that.

Get a 'oxygen' based cleaner soak overnight.

normal cleaner works based on surfacetant. oxygen cleaners works by dissolving the stains.

of course, you can use some elbow grease and polish them.

How to clean stainless steel appliances

Use extra virgin olive oil to clean and shine stainless steel. Apply with lint free cloth and rub into stainless steel following the grain of the steel. Then with dry portion of cloth buff like you would car polish and you will be amazed at the shine. It also provides some protection due to the fact it is a oil.

How To Clean Stainless Steel Appliances

First do a quick wipe of the appliance with a gentle liquid dish detergent & water mix, dry with a clean towel. After washing you’ll likely see the smudges and marks still hanging in there. You can buff out each smudge with a lint-free towel and some pressure, but try one of these items instead to bring back the shine and quickly remove those pesky fingerprints and smudges:
  • Olive Oil (just a dab will do)
  • Mineral Oil (Baby Oil)–Just a dab will do
  • Club Soda (especially good for removing streaks and heat stains)
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Vinegar (great for polishing too)
Apply directly to a lint-free cloth and wipe down surface, follow up with a clean dry cloth to bring appliance to a mark-free shine.
  • Avoid using cleaners or cleaning tools that are abrasive since they can mar the surface (even some soft-scrubbing creams can cause damage).
  • When cleaning the surface, wipe down the appliances along the grain of the stainless steel for best results.
  • Don’t clean stainless steel with bleach (diluted or otherwise), this can damage the finish.
  • Don’t forget to open the refrigerator or oven door, you’ll likely see a mess of smudges along the edge of the door.
