Icons and start up bar is missing

I have rebooted into task manager and was on the phone with Dell for an hour last week with no results. I was hoping to take care of it but still have a problem. I have tried the msconfigure, iexplore, defrag, etc

I am running Win XP Media Center Edition 2005. I do not have the installation disk.

For some goofy reason Dell does not supply the re-install disk when you buy a machine. Call them back and tell them (and insist) that they send it to you so you can rebuild your machine. You will probably get someone else to deal with, and the new person may have some good ideas, but in the end if they don't have it working in short order, they have the disks and will send them as soon as they agree that you need them to solve your problem.

Win xp laptop won't run programs fro Start menu

Either your system is really corrupted, or you've got a virus. The only think that comes to mind is to go to task manager, find explorer.exe and click End Process, then click File > New Task (Run...) and type explorer.exe. This will reload explorer and possibly fix the issue.

My volume icon on the task bar has disappeared, how do I get it back

Open the TASK MANAGER, open the PROCESSES tab, highlight "explorer.exe", click on "end process", Open "file", "New Task", Type "explorer" without quotation marks. OR Control Panel, Sound, depending on your OS, You will find a box to show tray icon. If it is checked, uncheck, apply, then check, apply. The Task Manager will remove stored icons that fill the program, and restart the icons.

Try these. Please restart your PC when its booting press F8 key . You will find few option asking for selection. Select that by using up/down arrow key. Select " Last know good configuration" & press Enter. Next page asking for selecting operating system, for example: windows vista or Windows XP etc. Just select the operating system & press Enter again. Task bar is missing on bottom of screen after pc wakes up.

mine does this with windows 7, right click on desktop and open 'personalize' then open 'taskbar and start menu'
From here choose to move your taskbar location to the side of the screen and click apply. it should return, then just tell it to go back to the bottom.

My desktop is blank all icons are gone with icon tray !

- Open Task Manager
- Terminate Explorer.exe (may of hung on start up) on the Processes Tab
- Back on the Applications Tab, click on New Task and type explorer after about a minute does the start menu and windows bar come back?
- If so download all the latest virus defs for your AV software and also the latest (and free) spybot search and destroy 1.6.2 - do a sweep for both spyware and software and remove all and reboot your PC.

This should help you - if not joy I would boot into Safe Mode and look at a system restore point. Also look for any unusual processes that are running in Task Manager - or ones you don't recognize since you last looked at them - if one looks dodgy, do a google search on it to see if its harmful and should be killed.

Good Luck
