Kitchenaid professional blade stops turning when meets resistance

Carol, if the beater stops turning under a load you are looking at gear problems. Depending on what model you have will depend on what gears need to be replaced. Most professional models have all metal gearing inside and must be taken apart and inspected to determine which part is bad, usually it is a combination of a few different gears.

If you can get the model number off of the base of the mixer then we can look up the correct parts and get you a service manual for the mixer as well.

Why wont my classic kitchenaid mixer switch off

Good Morning,

There is a spring inside your mixer attached to the speed control switch and speed control arm, the spring can sometimes get caught on the slide bar that is just below it inside the mixer. The other reason is that the speed control switch plate in the rear of the machine (that the spring attaches to) vibrates the three speed adjustment screws out or in and the spring will pull the speed switch (control arm that you use to control mixing speed when using the mixer) back to the stir position after you try to turn the mixer off.

If it is a spring problem you will have to do a full tear down to get at the spring and either free it or replace it. If it is a problem with the adjustment screws on the speed plate, that can be handled at the rear of the machine and is twice as easy to get at but sometimes much more frustrating to adjust. There are "YouTube" videos on the internet that will walk you through the process of adjusting your speed control plate just Google "adjusting speed on kitchenaid mixer" I hope this helps. please let us know if it does and if you have other questions just post them here and we will "FixYa"

What can I do to make my mixer turn on? It wont

Some ...what you may consider silly stuff...
1 check the outlet that you are plugging your mixer into it may be bad. Not the wire but the plug in the wall may be bad, plug a hair dryer in on high if it runs for 60 seconds it ok.
2 check the plug of the mixer make sure it is not bent at the wall pins
3 open the rear of the mixer by removing the round cover at the rear of the mixer look for loose wires, sometimes the socket connectors on the speed switch break off.
4 there are three screws on the speed control switch that control the mixer, sometimes after time these screws can actually turn due to vibration and the mixer will just not start....so.....start with the top right screw and turn it counter clock wise a quarter turn and start the mixer if it starts even for a half a second then the problem is in the switch. and your only problem is the proper timing set by the three screws.
5 gears inside the mixer can strip and freeze the motor so nothing turns...put your ear next to the machine mid way and turn it on ...if you hear a hum from inside then it is a gear problem.
6 If your machine is older then 1978 then it may be the IR filter inside the mixer (hard to find )
7 the carbon brushes that are located on the side of the mixer may have finally worn down (cheap fix) but there are four ways to put the new brushes into the machine and only one way works. You have to be careful with the beveled edge of the new brush and which way it fits back into the housing.
8 Now you are inside the mixer if everything else fails, the motor is the next step and it will require a full tear down, to repair, there are two parts the armature and the winding and each will take about thirty-five bucks to get and either or both will take about 2 hours to repair but if you go all the way down then you need a new gasket and gear grease clean and re-pack too. At this point you are performing an overhaul . let us know if this helps.

Mixer makes terrible sounds then stopped working

Hello Emily, the problem is the internal gears have broken, stripped or popped loose due to heavy loads during use. The solution is to go to the KA site and get a parts list for you model machine first thing. You can download it from here
http://www.kitchenaid.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/OCManualsLiteratureSearchResultView?catalogId=10552&langId=-1&storeId=10202
you will need the full model number for the correct parts list. then you will need about 30 minutes and an open work space and a couple plastic bags, a roll or paper towels and a little patience.
Yow ill be opening the machine cover removing it and placing the screws in one of the bags and mark on the bag with sharpie pen "cover screws", next you will need to remove the transmission cover (messy) and removing the gasket, toss the gasket (you will be ordering a new one $6.00 bucks) place the cover and screws in bag and mark. then look at the gears inside you will see several, rotate by hand I believe that you will find the culprit, it is more than likely the "worm follower gear" BTW if you open the machine and the transmission cover is black plastic check it for cracks, it was a major cause of this problem some years ago and KA has since relsoved the problem by the use of an all metal transmission cover, if it is cracked you will need a new one ($26.00 plus shipping) now find the broken gear and order a new one and replace it. Next if the grease inside your mixer is not all watery you can reuse it by scraping out with a popsicle stick and put in something that you can easily get it back out of for later use. if the grease is all watery you will need new ($7.00 bucks) (all the parts can be bought at several sites on the internet at once to cut down on shipping) Then re-assemble. There are several good if long winded videos on youtube that go through the tear down and replacement and re-assembly of the 600 machine that will guide you through process. Good luck and be patient.

Hi! my mixer is about over 10 years old , its making a sqeeking like kind a noise and its spains i think a bit to fast , could you tell me what do you think is the problem

I had your same issue with the speeds. I think you need to adjust the speed through the speed control panel.
Open the back spherical cover on the Kitchenaid KSM90, the area with one screw on the top. You should see the speed control panel, a black and gold square connected to wires. There should be three large silver screws - two on the top, left and right - and one on the bottom. If you turn the top two screws clock wise the machine slows down at lower speeds. When you adjust the bottom screw, the higher speeds are effected. This process is called "tuning" and you can find an online video how-to through sites like Youtube.
As for the squeaking, you maybe replace some of the grease inside of the machine. Food grade gear lube would do if you are up for the challenge, but kitchenaid also sells a grease for their stand mixers for a pricey $20. It isn't hard to put in new grease and clean out the old but requires a lot of disassembly.

Overheat after grating cheese, make an awful noise to top it up , have i burned the gears ?

You are putting too much pressure and overloading (motor) the Mixer. Specially if you run it for long time.
Grating cheese is hard on mixers.

Let it rest and turn it back on, ON LOW and little or no load.

The attachment for grinding meat on the front wont work ? mixing arm in bowl works fine ! why wont it engage?

Firstly I would check it is fully engaged. If it is, remove the food grinder and look into the hole. You should be able to see a square hole inside. Turn on the mixer, the square hole should spin, if it does not, one of the gears inside the head has most likely broken. To repair this you will need to take the head apart.

The other possibility is that I misread your problem and that the grinder is turning, but the meat wont go through the plates at the end. This is a common issue which happens if the blade is not put in the end of the grinder. The blade is shaped like a cross and cuts the meat when it reaches the end of the screw.

Kitchenaid artisan mixer does not turn the blade at low speeds

If it is the worm gear then the planetary will stop turning when there is a load on the paddle but the motor will continue to run at the speed you set it at. I'd be checking the carbon brushes, checking that the field assembly has not loosened up a bit and then I would see if the speed control plate adjustment screws are loose. I'd then reset the speed and see if it stays as it should be.

KitchenAid KSM90 gear stripped?

I just ran into this problem when the PLASTIC worm gear broke and then the mixer would not power on after I replaced the gear. The problem was due to the was I tried to dissasemble the mixer. I removed the two plastic screws near the top center of the mixer when attempting to disassemble. These do not have anything to do with the assembly it turns out the attached square pieces (attached to these screws by springs) must be in the proper orientation to run. I put them in the way it showed in a diagram but it did not work until I tried all four different combinations that they could be rotated. Two of the rotations on the square could be eliminated by closely looking at the end where it contacts the shaft. The round shaft marking will be evident on the square inserts. I'mnotsure how to better describe them, but the are attached by springs to the plastic screws on both sides of the top of the mixer.

Mixer doesn't run

you can take it apart by removing the pin which is in the shaft that does NOT hold the attachments....... i got mine out with a nail set and a gentle tap or two with a hammer. after you remove that pin the portion that holds the attachments will slide down revealing three more screws and some gearing. if you remove those three screws....... the top will come apart (assuming you have removed the other four screws which are visible when the unit is assembled) and you will see the circuit board.
