How do you set a timer?

That depends on the timer. Would you care to specify the make and model of the timer or of the device it's attached to?

When i press the power switch on and set to low cook and set the timer and press cook button the heater element will not come on

It may have burned-out. They're not really replaceable, so you'll probably have to buy a new slow cooker.

On the dial there is off, low, high and auto. What does the auto do? If I select auto is there a timer on it that shuts the pot down after a time? Is fo what is the time.

There is no timer -- with the dial set to auto, a thermostat opens and closes turning the heating element(s) on and off to keep the pot at a fairly constant temperature. The high setting can continually boil the contents, and can burn the food if not stirred. The low setting is for keeping contents warm.

I'd use "auto", if the pot is not going to be monitored.

Is there a way to set high with more than 6 hours ? I need to set mine for 20 hours in high.

Not unless there is a delay setting on the machine. You could get a timer plug to put into the wall socket. The type you use to ste lights to come on and off when away from home.

How long is the warm setting after cooking?

if there is no timer then it will warm indefinately, this being a slow cooker will take some time to warm anything but will do so very gently.

Why won't it work?

I had the same problem with mine. Set your timer and then hold the start/stop button until the light in your timer starts flashing, it will then start warming up.
