If you want your desktop to act as a router you will need additional LAN port(s) and at least two NICs. Software to facilitate this is included with most operating systems but it takes some in-depth knowledge to set it up.

If the servers are on different subnets then a router will be your only option, you could setup Remote Desktop Connection between servers so they are accessible from any computer on the network. That would be my recommendation.

Hope this helps,

IP conflict on my home network

Hi.
If there is an IP conflict, that means that two different devices connected to your home router are getting the same IP. In this case one or more connected devices will have limited connectivity, as they will be unable to access network resources.

The following troubleshooting must be performed on one networked device at the time.

Check if the internet provider that you are using allows DHCP. Most broadband providers use DHCP.

DHCP (dynamic host control protocol) means that the IPs, instead of being static are being assigned each time by the router.

If you use DHCP, then ensure that all devices connected to the network are not set on Static IP. If there is a device that must be set on static (eg. a network printer), then change manually the device IP to a different one. Ensure that the new IP belongs to your network range.

Reset the network settings on all connected devices. On computers remove the network adapter from the installed hardware devices list in control panel.
Restart computers one by one, after removing the adapter, and allow the network card to reinstall, using driver disk when needed (ensure that you have the drivers first). It will set itself to DHCP by default.

If that does not work, then you can try changing MAC address on Windows. The MAC address is an unique identifier that is assigned by manufacturer to any Ethernet adapter. The MAC address is used by the router to determine IP. To this purpose see: Changing MAC addresses on Windows .

If still no luck , then the next step would be resetting and re-configuring the router again, using the settings given by your ISP. Ensure that you have your Internet Service Provider configuration settings before resetting the router

At this point it may be worth testing a different Ethernet adapter (eg an USB adapter), rather than resetting the router.

If all that does not work, then either the router, or one of the two network adapter is probably defective. In some case virus or malaware can also cause IP conflicts. In that case ensure that the computer is clean, and eventually replace the router, after testing PC network adapter.

Note:If your home LAN uses static settings instead of DHCP, simply check that the IP set for each device is different.

Regards.

When you use your wireless-enabled computer far outside the range of your wireless-enabled router, you definitely will be trying to connect to a different wireless-enabled router.

That "foreign" router will broadcast a different SSID than your router is broadcasting.
Use "View Available Wireless Networks" to find that SSID, and "connect" to it.

Correct.

I have 2 Dell laptops using a Linksys WRT54GS but I can only use one at a time. Have to shutdown one to use the other.. What to do????

your router is not functioning as a router... its acting as a hub... your router is in the dormant state and it is acting as a pass through device....In this case you will not get an ip address from router, instead you will get an ip address directly from the modem....

you need to reset the router and reconfigure it according to the internet service provider....only that would help....

I want to hook up my computer, copier, and wireless router so I can use my laptop. how do you do it?

Hello,

To make your home network, connect everything to the router and power up in this order: Router, Desktop, printer and notebook. The router will get its IP address from your ISP and acting like a DHCP server will give IP addresses to each device connected to it. Just make sure the desktopa and notebook are in the same workgroup.

Good Luck

I have fogotten how to setup the Speedstream 2624 as an access point in a wireless network. I am not using it as a router but would like to use it as a printer server with a different router acting as...

If you dont want this router to be a DHCP, all you need is disable the DHCP function in this router. So, this router will only act as a switch and will not provide IPs to the other devices.
To disable the DHCP,you need to log on to the web interface of this router . Hope this helps

NEED SOFTWARE FOR THE BELKIN WIRELESS G ROUTER

Routers do not require any software to set them up. Instead, they are configurable by access a built in web page on the device. While the address of the page will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, most belkin devices will be accessible by clicking on this link: http://192.168.2.1. The default setup will not use a password, so just click submit. You should now be able to configure the device. If you get stuck, refer to the product manual for your specific router.
If that link I provided before does not let you in, then someone at sometime has changed it's configuration. It's best to perform a reset on the equipment, which is also detailed in the manual.
Comment back with the specific model of your router (found on the bottom of the router), and i'll see if I can hep you locate the manual.

Tring to bridge my 2wire

Why do you need to bridge?

Can't you use both devices off the one router?

usually to bridge you would need, effectively , 2 extra access points to set as the bridges, they then connect to the other routers, allowing communication between the 2.

I do know 2wire is slightly different but you would still need something to act as a bridge on the netgear end.

I still don't understand why you need both routers running. Connect both your computers to the same router which has the internet connection.

Hope this helps
