1 Answer

I got my mower out the other day it did fine till I engaged the electric pto, it then died and I cant get it started since then. It is getting spark and is getting fuel. It act like it is flooded , I have cleaned the plugs and they have fuel on them. It will not even attempt to fire.

If the fuel is set too high and the choke is on it is easy to flood it. The solution is to open the choke and keep the throttle low for a few turns to air dry the spark plugs then back to choke to start it again

I have turned choke off low throttle and cranked and cranked and no fire. I even took the fuel pump off and drained fuel and sprayed fuel in the carb and still no fire. I am not sure what to try next.

The next step i would take is to make sure the magneto is not rusted shorting the laminations If so give it a quick cleaning. Test for a spark or hold the spark plug wire while cranking to see if there is a voltage if not then the coil on the magneto may need to be replaced

Do u think the flywheel key broke and it is out of timing?

  • mikadot
    mikadot Oct 17, 2013

the flywheel's purpose is to give the engine centrifugal force to help the engine get to the next stroke. It is also the easiest point to place a starter to start the engine. It has nothing to do with timing

so what is your next idea?

If it is getting a spark... maybe the spark isn't strong enough. Make sure the magneto is not rusted (this is where it generates electricity) The magneto and coil pass each other The laminations of the magneto can't be rusted and shorting each other out. Also make sure the spark plug is screwed into a dry clean oilfree openning and that it is clean and gapped according to specs.

First what needs to be established is if it is a fuel or spark related issue.

1. test for a sparkissue: using a spark tester inserted in to the spark plug boot and clamped to bare metal on the engine. Engage the starter while inspecting for signs of spark.

2. Test for a fuel issue: using fuel in a stream style spray bottle outside and away from your building. remove the air filter assy. so as to open the throttle butterfly and spray a small amount of fuel into the carburetors air cylinder, close the throttle butterfly and attempt to start, listening for a reaction.

If the engine was retired for a season and was not prepped for storage properly, then my guess would be that unspent fuel that was left in the carburetor float bowl and may have varnished, thus clogging the carburetors ventries. If this is the case. a float bowl cleaning will resolve the issue.

Another typical issue are safety switches that are not engaged or faulty and can be found at one or all of these locations.

1.neutral safety switch found at the gear shift area

2.PTO drive lever area

3. Clutch/brake pedal switch

4. Operators seat switch, under the seat

All of which could cause the coil not to fire. Most of which are ground switches that could be unplugged to by-pass.

Possible issue could be a fouled or faulty spark plug.

I hope this helps.
Good luck

SOURCE: just bought a used ferris

I would suspect low oil pressure or oil sending unit faulty. Low oil pressure is sometimes caused by foaming or watery oil (fuel in oil).
When starting the engine, oil alert is bypassed at the start switch. Easy to check. Just remove the sending unit wire at the engine. If engine continues to run, check condition of oil. If oil looks to be in good condition and correct amout, suspect faulty sending unit. If engine continues to cut-out due to spark, check all safety features that cut engine. This would include the brake, stearing arms if hydraulic, seat sensor, blade clutch and more. There is a lot of wiring in your unit that could be shorting coil. Wiring diagram would be nice but removing all kill wires from the coil would be easy test. There is an aftermarket oil pressure test kit available on the web. Google "Kohler oil pessue test kit", could be part # 25 76106-s not sure. This kit is installed by removing the oil filter and installing an adapter. Then read oil pressure of gauge. Good luck

What do I need to check to activate starter will not engage. Engine will start but dies when blades are engaged

If your mower runs fine, but dies when the blades are engaged, that has nothing at all to do with the starter - or with the engine. There is a malfunction is in either the electrical system, PTO clutch or one of the safety features somewhere. Check all of the belts first for wear or breakage, then if they're OK, you probably need a small engine mechanic, but it doesn't sound really serious.

John deere 2210 engine dies when engaging pto, seat switch good

are you sitting in the seat or have you jumped the safety switch under the seat before you engage the PTO I believe our tractors use an electric solenoid to apply hydraulic pressure to a wet clutch inside the trans axle I would think it would be OK with your chipper I have a 450 tiller that was built for the older 400 models 425 445 455 that I now use with my 2210 If I hit a large root or stone when using it with my old 445 it would stall the tractor at full power. Now with the 2210 it will actually slip the clutch on the tiller s PTO shaft I think the correct approach would be to increase your RPM s gradually or start increasing the power just as you trip the PTO switch. You want enough RPM s to create enough hydraulic pressure to run the PTO circuit so that you don t slip the wet clutch anymore than necessary and you want the RPM s low enough so that you don t shock the mechanical systems too severely at start up
Let me know how it works

When I engage the front PTO the engine dies.

There is somthing in the PTO that is binding up. I am assuming the PTO is for the mower blades. The belt(s) could be binding up, not on the pulleys, etc. The blades should turn by hand easily.
