Question about Office Equipment & Supplies
This error is an issue with the printers electronics. The only thing you can try to fix this is by removing the printhead from the printer. Wipe down the printhead as best you can cleaning any ink that may be on the base or back of it. If you have contact cleaner you can also spray contact cleaner on the contacts on the back of the printhead and inside the printer. Dry it off as best you can reinstall the printhead and hopefully you will be up and running.
Unfortunatley it is one of those errors that can pop up out of nowhere and kill a printer. I work for rihac and through the installation and service of printers using our inklink product we have found that this is the only solution to bypass the error.

Delete the printer (MacOS X), and then add it back again
Reset the printer
Try a different data cable

SOURCE: canon pixma mp540 error 5100
Error 5100 points to a "carriage jam"
The carriage is the assembly that contains the printhead and cartridges.
This error can be difficult to solve because various things can cause it.
Since this is a new printer, maybe there is some packing or packing tape that is obstructing the carriage.
Verify that the carts and printhead are installed properly.
Check the gears as best you can for any obstructions.
If the carriage moves to a center position when you open the cover as if to change cartridges, try a reset to clear the error message :
1. Turn off printer (use button, don't unplug)
2. Hold down Resume button and press Power button.
3. Keep holding down Power button and let Resume button go.
4. Press Resume button 2 times then let BOTH buttons go.
5. Green lights will flash and then stop blinking.
6. When green lights are solid, press the Resume button 4 times.
7. Press the Power button and the printer should turn off, if not, press the Power button once more.
8. Your printer should respond as normal
Sometimes you have to try this a couple of times, if you've never done it before.
If this does not work, unplug, wait 3-4 min, then re-plug in. Enjoy..

Try keeping the paper only in the bottom tray (there's a tray in the bottom) Try pulling any paper out of the top and just close that top tray. Open up the head so that u can see the ink cartridges and turn the printer on and off and maybe it will center itself again. If it's still not working (even if lights aren't red and print head wont align in the center) try manually moving the head back and forth like 18 times so you can lubricate that rail in the back that's holding it. After that, re-turn it off and on again.

Try to press down on the sponge to get it to work again. It may be a waste toner issue, which generally is repaired at an authorized service center for canon by contacting 1-800-OK CANON or logging on to canonusa.com.
Good luck on this.
