Insufficient heatsink/fan for Opteron280 processor

I have a server system with a TYAN S2885ANRF(04MOAb ver) Motherboard that according to AMD has a insufficient heatsink/fan combination,of which the core cpu temp is too high (68C). AMD advised me to search for a better heatsink/fan combination for 2# AMD Opteron280 processors.

Which fan/heatsinks can be used on an MS-7174 Ver 1 motherboard? It seems there needs to be clearance for some capacitors to fit beneath it.

Heatsinks are dependent on the type of processor that you have, I recommend that you call Microcenter or fry electronic

Need scsi/raid drivers on floppy to install winxp pro (at f6 prompt)

Hello the drivers can be downloaded here:

http://www.tyan.com/support_download_drivers.aspx?model=S.S2865

You need to unzip the file before you install the driver.
It should not be nessesary to install drivers before installing the windows system.
Check your bios boot settings to boot from the cdrom or dvd drive.
The cd or dvd drive must be the first boot device in order to boot from the windows disk.
Install windows with only one harddrive.
You can also add a harddrive later, when the installation is done and all drivers is installed.

Good luck

Power shut down shortly after bios loads

Check the processor and heatsink/fan. If there is a bad contact between the heatsink and the processor, or the fan fails to turn the BIOS will shut the system down to protect the CPU from overheating. I hope this helps.

Amd athlon heatsink

Hi,
If you don't install the heat sink and fan carefully you could blow out your processor. Make sure you clean all the old heat sink paste from the processor and the heat sink. Then apply a thin layer of paste like "arctic silver" on the heat sink so that it makes full contact with the processor. I think you have a socket A processor...so do a google search for "installing a socket A processor" and you should have all the info you need. Good Luck...Hank

CPU over emperature

It sounds like you have a couple of potential problems. First it could be the fan is not working due to failure or not being plugged in properly. Second is that you need to put Thermal Paste between the processor and the heatsink. If you have not done this before, I suggest seeking out a friend that has to help out. There is many kinds of thermal paste and not one is universal. Find out the one that the CPU manufacturer recommends.

Trobleshooting

I had the same issue with my AMD Athlon 3800+ dual core. I found that I wasn't getting enough airflow to keep the system and processor cool. You may want to check the heatsink and fan rating for your processor unless it was sold in a bundle. Also, On AMD's of such power, they tend to run hot if overclocked. Look into, if you haven't already 2 case fans to go along with the processor fans. I recommend a 90mm in front and a 80mm in the rear of the case. If this doesn't help, let me know.
