If you dont have a floppy drive is it disabled in bios.
Are you sure your power supply is powerful enough?
If none of the above then return the hdd - its faulty

There is no master or slave with sata drives! Ignore the jumpers

  • Fritzelly Apr 24, 2009

In fact you should take it off unless you need backward compatibility

  • Fritzelly Apr 24, 2009

Its a new HDD, when you put it in its telling you its having problems reading the disk.

Take it back to the shop

  • Fritzelly Apr 24, 2009

No problem, sometimes HDD's just dont work

  • Fritzelly Apr 24, 2009

Just thinking - was the old drive a SATA?

  • Fritzelly Apr 24, 2009

Ok you left before my comment.

You didnt answer about the floppy drive, go into your bios and disable the floppy drive if you dont have one.

  • Fritzelly Apr 24, 2009

If you do have a floppy drive make sure there isnt a floppy in it,

Change boot order in bios so your hdd is first.

  • Fritzelly Apr 25, 2009

You probably have 2 sata connectors on the board (at least) - try the other connector

In bios check the drive is configured to sata and not ide - unless you specifically want it to act like ide

I have to go but will be back tomorrow if not solved.

  • Fritzelly Apr 25, 2009

Just to be sure you have connected the power cable to it as well...

It sounds to me like the on-board HDD controllers are dead. Have a look at the motherboard... I'll wager you'll see a fried capacitor right in the middle. Common Dell failure :(

Sata hdd windows dell recovery cd will partition install windows

The system is originally designed to use IDE HDD, make sure the necessary chages for Sata HDD are made in the BIOS, next make sure the Recovery disc is fine without any scratches. You can order a new Windows OEM recovery disc by calling Dell tech support (1-800-624-9896-US) and try installing the OS. The disc will cost you not more than $12.

I need the drivers a western digital sata 160 g hard drive model wd1600aabb for the xp platform please!!! can anyone help?

There are no such drivers....sata hard drives use windows drivers...if the computer is asking for drivers for a hard drive, then it is seeking drivers within windows...which means there could be corruption in those windows drivers that the WD HDD needs. Try going to windows update, let it load and check for updates and instead of hitting express, hit custom and look in the left hand pane for hardware updates and see if the drivers for a hard drive would be there. WD only offers Firmware updates and software for its HDD's.

Trying to install hard drive on Dell Dimension 8200.

Sounds like the drive from the 4700 is a SATA drive which uses a different connector than the 40-pin IDE. I couldn't confirm it, but the 8200 may not have SATA connectors for this type of drive. Although the 4700 appears to have both SATA and IDE.
