Question about Dyson DC17 Animal Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum
My Dyson DC17 animal vacuum loses suction to the wand. There is not a clog in the wand, or the hose, or the U bend. Recently I washed the filter. When I put the filter back in & used the vacuum, the suction to the wand was back to normal, but it quickly lost suction again. (Within minutes of use) I checked the filter, it seems fine. Again, it worked better, then lost suction again after a few minutes.
Your cyclone assembly may need to be striped down and cleaned also remove the exhurst filter located under the bin.

Use the upholstery brush supplied to unclog the perforations on the Dyson filter; the clogged holes don't impede on suction so you dont have to worry about this. It can be annoying however when you see it.
Click on this page and it will take you directly to the Dyson page (UK) for your Animal model. It wll open up for user manual in another window
www.dyson.co.uk is a very well stocked website which has manuals for virtually all DC models sold.

you need to check the clean out ports 1 directly under the hose on the bottom and the other where the removable filter is

I had the same issue. Got on the phone with Dyson. THe vacuum has a safety feature where if the motor gets too hot it cuts off. You have to leave it for 45 minutes or so and then it will work again. There is an underlying issue though. My problem was the black gasket thats in the debris bin shifted, probably from when emptying i pushed it on something. The black gasket should actually hang off the bottom like a skirt and the 2 groves should fit in on the groves of the gray mechanism. This seal is what provides 100% suction. Because of this..my vaccumm has been accumulating pet hair by the belt which i hear alot of people talking about and especially in the filter area. This is because I broke the seal by not having the gasket in place properly and it wasnt sucking 100%. They are sending me a complete new cyclone unit which has the debris catcher as well as she said its probably so caked up with debris it will never work again 100%. no questions asked they are sending it to me free of charge.
So if you remove the clear cyclinder debris catch thing all you will have is the purple cyclone on top and on the bottom is the black rubber gasket....

Hi its Darran at Dyson.
From your description of the problem, it sounds as though the wand/hose is blocked. To check this, remove the wand/hose assembly from the machine, switch it on and test the suction from the top of the wand with your hand. If the suction is poor, remove the wand from the hose and test the suction from the top of the hose. If its good here, then you know that the wand handle is blocked.

Hi its Darran at Dyson.
It sounds as though the wand handle is blocked. To check this, remove the wand/hose from the machine as if you were going to use it to vacuum the stairs. Switch the machine on and test the suction at the top of the wand handle with your hand. If the suction from the wand is poor, remove the wand from the hose and test the suction again from the top of the hose. If the suction here is good, then you know the wand handle is blocked. If the suction is poor at the hose, you can remove the hose from the machine and clear any blockages here.
For the full blockage procedure please visit the support section on our website at www.dyson.com.
