Your router will have a firewall built into it as well as your laptop firewall, as long as you have wep wpa-psk security on your wireless network there should be no problem along with an internet security programme

Acer doesn't connect to protected wireless internet

It looks like you've keyed it in once, but you keyed it in wrong, so the system thinks the security key is there.

Which Operating System?

You can try connecting to another secured network and see if it asks for a security code, then try going back to your network.

Try getting to the security code by going to the wireless network connection and highlighting your network then click properties.

Wireless Network Security II

We browse the internet and have far fetching concerns of how secure our connection is, especially when its wireless. Here are a few pointers:

The security concerns with wireless network centre around :

Unauthorized access

Eavesdropping

The authentication component (pre-shared keys) of schemes such as WPA and WEP, as well as MAC address filtering, address the issue of restricting access to the wireless network to only authorized devices.

Encryption address the issue of protecting against eavesdropping on the wireless network traffic.

If you turn off WPA (or similar scheme), you are turning off an access control method as well as an encryption method. The wireless network traffic can then be easily eavesdropped on, and the MAC addresses and IP addresses of participating machines can be determined. These can then be spoofed, and the wireless network joined.

Turn back on WPA/WPA2.
Other way to prevent unauthorized network access are
1. Password-protect your wireless connection. Turn on WEP (wired equivalency privacy) or WPA (Wi-Fi protected access) on all of your devices, including your router, your media center. You may also set up a security key for your wireless network.
2. Place the wireless access point away from windows and near the center of your house to decrease the signal strength outside of the intended coverage area.
3. Keep all software current (including your Web browser) with automatic updates. Use firewall, antivirus, antispam, and antispyware software from a source that you trust and watch out for fake alerts for security software.

Hit the wireless tab and type network name in wireless network name.
Once you click on save settings your network is ready to use
Also secure the network by clicking on the wireless security and clisk on the security tab to protect your network.

My router is password enable before but no its not,how can i make it passsword enable again?i know my password

Here are some basic steps in setting up your Linksys router

Hope it helps!

Please follow the below instructions to protect your device:

  1. Connect your computer to the router using a network cable, or you can connect to the router through a wireless connection. Note that your wireless card in your computer must be enabled.
  2. Open your Web browser. Enter: http://192.168.1.1 in the address field. This is an internal IP address to access your router. Press the Enter Key.
  3. When the password request appears leave the user name field blank. By default, the password is admin.
  4. After logging in, you are not required to change the default administrative password. However, it's fully recommended that you change the default password by clicking on the Administration tab and Management. Enter a new password in the Password field and again in the Re-enter field to confirm.
  5. I recommend setting the Remote Management item as Disable. It will be another layer of security for your router. With this configuration you can only access your router for programming using a standard Ethernet network cabling.
  6. To save the new password, click Save Settings at the bottom of the page.
  7. To avoid intruders accessing your wireless connection we'll start to work with the Wireless tab.
  8. In the Basic Wireless Settings enter a name for your wireless network connection in the Wireless Network Name (SSID). Set the Wireless Broadcast to Disable.

When wireless clients survey the local area for wireless networks to associate with, they will detect the SSID broadcast by the Router if the Broadcast is enabled. Do not broadcast the Router SSID. It must be Disabled.

Note that your SSID should be set following similar rules for setting a password, e.g. at least 8 characters, a combination of letters, numbers and non consecutive characters.

Disabling the SSID broadcast is not a strong security setting, but it can help prevent intruders from sharing your WLAN. Remember to save your settings.

I got a new laptop it does not locate any wireless network

hi thanks for using fixya!

You can use a wireless network to share Internet access, files, printers, and more. Or you can use it to surf the Web while you're sitting on your couch or in your yard. Plus, it's easier to install than you think.

For Windows XP users, Windows XP Service Pack 2 is not required for wireless networking, but it does make things much easier. Service Pack 2 also helps protect you against hackers, worms, and other Internet intruders.

Wireless connection

You will need to speak to the person in charge of the security enabled network, and obtain the type of wireless security (WEP or WPA) and the password.

You should also determine what security types are supported by your own laptop's wireless connection. If it is an older one, it may only support WEP, and you will be unable to connect to any WPA protected networks.
