If it has a OMC or Volvo most are in the top of the outdrive. If your motor looks like a car engine it can be if the front just like a car. This website claims they have online access to repair manuals so I would look there first. Go to other websites and look for impellers with the brand of motor, like Volvo impellers, Mercruiser impellers and some of those sites have excellent parts diagrams.

My boat motor starts fine. But it will not move in forward or reverse. What do I look for?

Greatly depends on the make/ model of the motor, is it an outboard, Inboard, etc.

I just got a new boat this summer and I live in Seattle, where I will use my boat year round. I have been told that I should winterize the motor so it doesn't freeze in the lower temperatures. What should...

I used to live in the Chicago area. We definitely had winter (below zero).I went thru extensive winterization for the inboards and stern drives. I fogged outboards and put Sta-bil in the gas. I also ran the gas out of the carbs or drained them but the boats would sit unused for 6 months. Does the boat stay in the water? If on a trailer, lower the motor so it is in the run (trim down) and the water will run out. If you tilt it up after this for storage, cover the gear case as it can fill with rain water and freeze.

Mercruiser 5.7 litre inboard engine Impeller fault

You could be right. Check your idle rpm to see if the motor DIESELS after shutdown. See if linkage and carb setting can be reduced for RPM. Last, check your timing. If it has springs in the distributor you should not see rust powder on pivot points. Binding would keep engine overadvanced at shutdown. Then basic timing could be off too.

My exhaust is a lot hotter on the right side then the left

You do need a lot of water to prevent your problem. I think we are talking about an inboard or I/O unit. Make sure you replaced the flapper valves in the exhaust too. There should be a water pump on the motor as well as the impeller in the outdrive. Check to see if you have a sealed cooling system with a radiator or an open system using only outside water. There may be a thermostat in the motor in either case. Do not run a boat above idle when you use muffs and a hose. Everyones water pressure is different at the tap.
The closed system uses an intercooler and a radiator. You can have the same radiator problems as a car and you should always use antifreeze in the radiator to prevent rust. If the right side is hotter then it is probably more blocked.
