First of all, if you don't have any info there, you should format it, always that helps a lot, but if you have some info and you don't want to format it, well, check it on a pc, if it opens, that means that the hd is fine and the problem is the connection, like renx said, check if you can plug it with firewire, or usb, for mac is recomended the firewire, and its faster, but if you have only usb, it should work fine, so check if you can see it on the desktop, and if not check the finder, maybe it has another name or change its position

Must be usb, usually if you have other devices using this resource and have not closed them it will not work. close all then add hardware, follow the rest it should work.

I have a 320 gb acclaim portable hard drive. My mac doesn't read it, the first time I plugged it the lap asked me if I wished to format it and I said yes. Now it doesn't read it, what can I

You formatted the hard drive on your laptop in NTFS and the MAC cannot read and write to this formatted NTFS hard drive.
THE FIX
Format the hard drive using your laptop BUT this time format it in FAT32.
The MAC can read and write to a FAT32 formatted hard disk, so now you can exchange data between the MAC and the Windows laptop.

Yes. It's one of the features of the USB hardware interface,
and it's necessary for the Mac Operating System to be 'compatible' with the file-systems used on Windows computers.

I am trying to write files to a terabyte verbatim portable hard drive, but it saids the drive can not be modified. How do I write to the verbatim hard drive on my mac?

Hello,

Most verbatim drives are formatted to by default to NTFS which is a windows file system. NTFS can be read and copied from on Mac but not written to.

You will need to offload the data to one of your computers and reformat it with the mac.

Apple, Utilities, Disk Utility.

Once formatted for Mac you will be able to read and write to the drive but you will need to add macdisk to the windows PC to allow it to read and write to a Mac formatted disk.
