If it powers up take a look at whatever is the main amp. If it is a single device such as an IC then it could be faulty.

HDMI is video
YAMAHA rx-797 is a stereo amplifier audio

you need a 3.5 mm stereo lead to rca phone plug

Have a Sony 32" Bravia TV & Yamaha RX-V5000 Receiver. Unable to get the sound to come from the Stereo speakers connected to the RX-V5000 if watching TV. However, can get the Radio to play through the TV...

You probably want to connect the av Audio output from your tv and connect to the RX-V5000. The audio that you are getting from Radio through the tv is probably coming from the output of the RX-V5000 coming to your tv, to which the desiredd route is the other way.

The Outputs at the back should be labeled to tell you which channels are inputs or outputs.

My yamaha rx-v596 makes a clicking sound but does not turn on

If it clicks twice almost instantly (on then off within 1/2second) then its got a serious power supply imbalance.

If it clicks on then 5secs later clicks off then one of the amplifier channels has probably failed and the protection circuit is tripping it off to protect itself.

either way its a repair shop job I'm afraid

Yamaha RX-V3000's front channels quit working

The front channels could still go out if one of them
is going out as the relay will shut em both down if it senses a problem! Check also for bad solder connections too!

The unit does not work

check the standby power supply first and then the main power supply.also check the output transistors and fuses your problem is in one of those points, normally the standby transformer goes bad, it is the small one right next to the big one.
good luck
