Maybe your Graphic Card has overridden your system default audio setting by changing your Graphic Card to the primary sound device. I recommend checking to see what device is setup as your default device. You can do this by right clicking on your sound device icon and choosing playback devices. If your sound device is missing, right click inside the box and choose show disabled devices and enable whatever device is listed as disabled. Keep in mind, you should make sure the device you want to use is setup as your primary device.
You can either have a bad sound card/chip or just the driver being missing.
Does the sound device show up under start then control panel then system then device manager button which opens a new window ? It may show it marked in yellow. If it doesn;t show then the hardware has failed.
If it does and just needs a new driver then go to www.dell.com and click on support near the top. Then on the looking for drivers and downloads which opens a selection box. I went by choose model, click Desktop, then dimension, and finally 5100 and it takes you to the availabel downloads for that model.
Download the drivers and save it or just run it. When you run it it should install any drivers that are missing or become correupted. You may have to reboot but you should have sound.
If it doesn't find the hardware then it should error out and say hardware not found.
If the hardware is dead then you have a couple of options. One is to replace the main board. And the other would be to purchase a sound card and install that.
firstly you check, sound driver is available in your system or not,as per your comment i think sound driver is missing in your system.
follw the given instruction and check sound driver is available on not.
1- right clieck of "My Computer" icon
2- Chose the Manage option.
3- Go to the Device Manager option
4-Check Audio, video driver (if yeloow indication are showing in audio, video option)
Thats means sound driver are missing or need to be upgrade.
(Go to control pannel and open "Sound and Audio Devices" properties if all the options under it is disable thats means audio driver is missing)
When you parchase the system you carry a motherboard CD,put in that cd into cd drive and install the appropriate drivers,if you have no Cd in that condition you download the drivers from net,
Hi there. Plug the speaker jack into the green audio port, also check that its not on mute. To test the card get a pair of earphones and plug it into the pink port and see if you hear the audio. Post back with the results please.
Computers have a mind of their own at times. Here's what happened to me a few years back: I had the same kind of problem and finally figured out that windows automatically configured my system differently because there was a problem. The way I solved it was to put the sound card into a different slot and reboot. That may or may not help you further, but to know that your PC probably automatically changed its configuration might help you to solve it.
Yes goto your control panel, open Sytem and see Device Manager. If there is any icon with yellow color in the list, it means you have missing driver. If you have any missing driver that might be for your audio controller. If so then you have to install the driver for the device. Install the driver and enjoy.
Note: If you don't have driver then Ask Me for that with your sound card manufacturer name and model no.
