Question about Makita Tools 12" Compound Miter Saw - LS1221

1 Answer

Makita Ls1212 works intermittently

My mitre saw would occasionally stop working. Was a problem more and more until it would occasionally work. Now, it won't work. Tried different outlets just in case. I changed the brushes - worked for a little while. Now, not at all. The saw is 6 yrs old, but only gets used from time-to-time.

Hooah! Thanks for the suggestion. The power cord is in perfect condition (from a visual inspection). I guess I could check the continuity from the trigger to the plug.

Any idea how finicky the Makita is from a power requirement standpoint? I was originally under the impression that maybe the voltage from my box was insufficient - 113 v vice 120. I tried multiple outlets, but obviously they all go to the same box. The saw is now plugged into the outlet nearest the box.

Thanks, I'll give it a go.

Check the power cable. They could be broken or frayed and you are not getting enough power to it replace and then try to see if it works then. Make sure you buy the right size gauge for you machine

If a piece of electrical says it needs 120 volts. Then anything from 110 to 125 volts will run the unit just fine. I am talking more about a issue concerning a shortage in the unit. The trigger is another good spot to start at. Visual inspection sometimes is great, but sometimes there are broken wires that are not allowing even 90 volts to get to the machine. This seems to be something small, like the power cord or the trigger. Doesnt seem to be the brushes

Nota problem, if that does not work then write me back and we can look into other things. While you are in there checking the trigger, why dont you run some more diagnostics on the makita with the volt meter and see what is and what is not getting power. Remember though. The trigger should only be about 25 volts and some other parts will be the same way

Some mitre saws have extra windings in the field coil so a possibility is a break in this brake coil another possibility is the switch some have a contact that switches the back emf from the field coil to the brake coil when you release the trigger. And believe or it or not some times changing the brushes affects the braking have seen this a few times on the LS1013.

Change blade Makita LS1030 10-Inch Compound Miter saw

There is an 8mm bolt on the front of the guard. Loosen/remove this and the central guard mount will drop slightly. Behind the metal guard is a slide lock for the blade spindle. Push the lock bar and turn the blade untill it catches and is held solid. Then remove the blade fixing bolt and bobs your uncle. Alternativly, with all mitre saws, you can just pop an old bit of wood on the work base and then use the spannrer/allen key supplied to turn the blade so it bites into the wood as if you are trying to cut it. This will hold the blade steady and you will also be turning the bolt in the right direction.

Is there a safety or something that needs to be released to lift the mitre saw blade and handle up to get wood underneath the blade...borrowed from a buddy, not sure how it works.

Yeah, there is a latch type keeper on the back there that holds the motor down for transport. Should be easy to find. Hope this helps.

You can get it at, type in yr modal number in the search bar, download a parts breakdown or a manual, if not u can order a new sticker from makita.
