SOURCE: do not read the cd or dvd disc.
Two possibilities that are immediately apparent. One, the lens on the drive is dirty. Stop by a department store and buy a CD/DVD laser lens cleaner CD and put it in the drive several times, making sure that it tries to read it each time. This can brush away the debris on the lens and it may work again. Two, the drive motor or lens assembly (that moves) has failed. My experience is that these drives have a 2-3 year life span. Luckily, they are now bargain-priced and you can pick them up at your local discount store and replace them yourself.

SOURCE: cd/dvd drive problem
Try with another brand of disk; the Matsushita UJ870 drive of our 5315 burn my Sony CD's but not my Philips CD's (my Compaq V2617LA with an older Matsushita UJ840 drive has burned Phillips CD's in the last two monts)... Remember: CD and DVD lassers are different. I think because of that, i haven't see problems with Sony, Philips and Samsung DVD's... only with CD's...

you can try two solutions
1) go to device manager and uninstall the primary and secondary ide controller under the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and than restart the system and than chk it if that works out
2 ) if the first option doesnt work try to update the firmware of the drive

take a slightly damp q-tip and wipe down the laser in your drive. after this then try several dvd's and cd's and see if the drive will play them.
If after this it doesn't then the drive is bad and will need to be replaced cause the laser is bad and can't read discs properly.
