Question about GE 31GT659 31" TV

1 Answer

Picture too wide for screen

The picture on my GE 31GT659 set has been slowly growing bigger over the last 5 years. It cuts off both the right and left side of the picture although no black areas show on screen. (also top & bottom but not as severe) It's like the picture is zoomed in part way. Important info like the timeclock during a football game is off the side of screen. Are there any adjustments for horizontal and vertical size? Chassis # CTC187CH Serial # 630470845 I'm capable of soldering & swapping out whatever parts need changed, but I don't have any test equipment 'cept an old dmm. Thanks,

Re: Picture too wide for screen

Your problem is called blooming as you might be aware of very high voltage in tv. you can check 1 high output voltage fron power supply. 2 if it is ok then the problem is in horizontal can check hor. section at last flyback transformer. hope this will help.

My tv screen is too wide horizontally. I can't see but what's in the middle of the picture. Do I need to purchase a new tv or is this something that can be fixed?

go into video set up and take tv out of zoom mode

it sounds like you have it set to zoom a standard definition signal and that will make picture become bigger than the screen and cut picture off

hope that helps

No picture

The main problem is from theTV menu.I would recommend you press, menu, then settings, then display settings, and last tv screen. After, you'll get options on how you want to make your screen look like.Example:wide screen, Automatic, etc.

Screen is too dark

with a flashlight at the back of the set often times there is an adjustment you can make WITHOUT having to open the set!!!

look for a little hole in the back of the plastic cabinet labeled SCREEN then with a flat screwdriver holding only the plastic handle, insert it into the hole and SLOWLY rotate until the screen brightens up until it is watchable.

This is compensating for age in the picture tube. you may get a few day or a few more years! of a much better picture.

If you start seeing some thin lines on the screen then back off you have gone too far. Do this adjustment with the brightness and contrast controls on the menu turned up all the way.

it is also safe to play with the focus adjustment right next to the screen if thing seem a little blurry. you will need two people one to watch from a distance for best picture.

GE TV 31GT659 - is it Digital?

No, it's not digital. If she has cable service, however, it won't be a problem, come February 2009 as cable services are supposed to supply the ability to "convert."

Bottom of picture is cut off

Usually when the vertical starts shrinking slowly, it is due to capicators getting out of tolerance in the vertical output section of the chassis. If it can be adjusted out through a service menu, you'll probably need a tech with the right equipment to perform it.
