OK....try doing this. Please open the application "Console". It is located in Applications>Utilities. Click on "All Messages" on the left hand side. Look through there for any errors. Now, while you have the Console open and at the bottom of the list, click the Apple icon at the top left of your computer screen. Then, click "System Preferences". When it doesn't launch, look in the console and tell me what errors or messages show up there.

This just indicates that the dock icon can not find the system preferences folder, just delete the icon from the dock. Then go to your applications folder find the system preferences and just drag it onto the dock that will fix it.

How do i change my screensaver design to dictionary word of the day?

Hi Kyle,

Here is how to change the screensaver to Word of the Day.

Click on the Apple icon at the very top right of your screen and select System Preferences. The System Preferences window will open and you will see rows of icons. Click on the Desktop & Screen Saver icon. In the next screen, click on the Screen Saver tab. Now you will see a list of different type of screen savers. Scroll down to the bottom and select Word of the Day. Close the System Preferences windows and now your screen saver should be set to Word of the Day.

Hope that helps!

Thank you,

Mac monitor resolution

Click on the apple icon in the upper left corner and select "System Preferences" from the menu to open the preference panel. Then click "displays" on the panel (it should be listed under hardware and will have a monitor icon). There you can see all of the resolution options.

Printing with HP Photosmart printers is controlled by the driver software that is installed during the printer driver installation. Changes to the printer preferences can be set and changed in the Preferences dialog box. Changing preferences from within a software application Preferences set from within a software application will only change settings for the application or the current document, depending upon the application. The methods of accessing the dialog box will differ, depending on the software program being used. One of the following methods will usually open the Preferences dialog box from within the application:
  • Click File , Print , then click the Preferences or Properties button.
  • Click File , Print Setup , then click the Preferences or Properties button.
  • Click File , Print , Setup , then click the Properties button.
  • Click Print , Properties , then click Printer Assistant .
Changing the default settings Preferences changed from within the printer driver will change the default settings for the printer. One of the following methods will open the printer driver Preferences dialog box:
  • Click the Taskbar Printer icon.
  • Right-click the applicable Photosmart icon in the Printers folder, then click Printer Preferences from the pop-up menu.
  • Right-click the applicable Photosmart icon in the Printers folder, click Properties from the pop-up menu, and then click the Printer Preferences button on the General tab.

Sytem preferences on mac 10.0 cheetah wont open

If you don't have the System Preferences in the Dock, just drag the icon from Finder under Applications to the Dock. On the other hand, if the icon is misbehaving in the Dock, then right click on the icon in the Dock and select Options>Remove from Dock and then do what I wrote in the first sentence.
If the above did not help you try this, go  to the dock, and, while holding down the "control key", select the System Preferences icon. This opened up a dialogue box with few choices...then choose "Quit". Then System Preference application  opened.

Will not print in Black

Check the Print in Grayscale setting If the self test page printed Black, the ink cartridges are okay, and the ink levels are well above empty, the printer software has probably been set to print in color. Follow the steps below to check this setting:
  1. In the software application you are trying to print from, click File , then Print . The Print dialog opens.
  2. Make sure your printer is selected, then click Preferences . The printer Preferences dialog opens.
  3. Select the Color tab, then make sure that Print in grayscale is selected.
  4. Try the print job to see if this step resolved the issue.
And also follow the steps given below to change the setting in printers and faxes preferences.
  1. Click on Start, Open Control panel
  2. Double-click on printer and faxes
  3. Right-click on printer Icon and select properties or preferences.
  4. Now in preferences box check whether printing in black is enabled.
Now try to print a document from Word.

Mac Mini Desktop/Finder Problem

Hello, sorry to hear you are having problems,
THis is a classic symptom of corrupt finder preferences.
Best way to test this is to log in under another user account. If you do not have another user account, please create one, call it myadmin or something like that give it the same password as you have for your user and be sure to give it admin privileges.
You can do this by going into the system preferences and selecting the Accounts icon and clicking on the ( + ) on the bottom left hand side.
If the new user account exhibits the same symptoms, the finder may actually be corrupt. Don't worry, this is very very rare...
So, if the other user seems fine, we need to check a few things before going any further...
Have you installed any new programs or utilities or fonts or anything lately?
If so, be sure they did not install anything in your startup items, you can check this in the system preferences / accounts / Login Items... go through the list and remove anything you did not put there yourself. If you do find a few things, simply select them and hit delete on the keyboard or the ( - ) minus sign on the bottom left hand side of the window.
If you removed several items, try rebooting and see if it is better.
If there was nothing, we may need to delete your finder preferences.
Are you up for this, we are going to trash your finder preferences and then restart ..
  1. make sure nothing is running except the finder
  2. open your user home folder
  3. open your library folder
  4. open your preferences folder
  5. find this file: com.apple.finder.plist
  6. put it in the trash
  7. DO NOT EMPTY TRASH
  8. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE
  9. restart your computer
  10. empty trash once you have restarted
  11. fix up your finder the way you like it. Voila
You should be able to get on your way with this...
