Question about HP iPAQ HX4700 Pocket PC

IPAQ HX4700 won't sync with desk top

The Problem: The Hx4700 will not establish a connection (sync) with my desktop. Despite numerous trials to resolve the problem, virtually all attempts to connect the PPC to the desktop have resulted in the following scenario: After connecting 4700 to the desktop USB, a window indicates "New hardware .. is detected" shortly, another window indicates "Your device is installed and ready to use". (Deceptive message) Next, the ActiveSync window is displayed, the status logo is moving, the message says "Connecting" After about one minute another message indicates "ActiveSync cannot connect to your mobile device" Another dialog asks if you want to trouble shoot. Answer "yes" Next, a dialog box asks if you want to scan. The answer - yes or continue. About one minute into the scan another message states: "ActiveSync has encountered a problem and has quit ... sorry... if you didn't save your work, too bad." Attempts to resolve the problem: I Have tried connecting the PPC to two different desk tops, (running Win XP Pro) Received a replacement PPC and repeated the described procedures on both desktops. Have tried virtually all solutions or steps listed in the -- Hx4700 users manual, the HP web page on line help, the Microsoft ActiveSync on line help, as well as a few suggestions listed in discussion forums. (Brief summary: - checked,and rechecked the desktop and PPC to insure compliance with the recommended settings, removed and reinstalled different versions of ActiveSync, performed hard and soft resets on the PPC, disabled the firewall and antivirus, and deleted the past partnership with a Dell PPC.) Concession: I've decided that syncing would not be essential if I could install some of my favorite programs on the HP4700 by transferring them from the desktop to the memory card, then install the programs from the memory card to run on the PPC. I could always remove the memory card from the PPC and manually back up the data on the desktop. I haven't tried that yet, much easier to sync. Suggestions welcome. PaButch.

    Thanks for the information. I will try the ROM update tonight after work -- if I'm still awake. This time of year I have two jobs. My regular job as an engineer, 6:30 til 3:30 and my home business job, picking apples in our orchard. 4:00 til dark, then help sort them for the next days sales. I picked 40 boxes last night and need to get 50 tonight. That routine continues for about a month. So if I don't have time to try the solution you'll know why.

    As mentioned in the first post, I did try similar procedures on two different desktops, both running windows XP pro. Same result on both computers. The PDA has Win Mobile 3. Once we get it running, (able to sync) I plan to upgrade to Mobile 5.

Hello, Please try the following steps. They could help with your problem. First open this link to hp's download page for your PDA. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?&lang=en&cc=us&pnameOID=420535&taskId=135&prodTypeId=215348&prodSeriesId=420534&lang=en&cc=us Then select your pda's operating system (windows mobile 2003se or windows mobile 5). then from the following page select the ROM update and download it. Try to master reset the pda (you may find informations about this in the user manual). After you reset the device, don't tap anything on the screen (don't follow the welcome wizard or anything it asks you to do). Just connect the usb cable to the computer. Activesync may try to connect to the pda, may fail or things like this. It doesn't matter what does it do as long as it does something. Now open the ROM file you downloaded and press "next" untill the process begins. If the setup asks you to reset the device or things similar, don't do it. Just continue with the setup and "tell" the program you already done that. Make sure your battery is charged before doing this. Also make sure the pda and the computer are left alone these 10 minutes (that's how long it takes to do the ROM update). If the ROM update fail, please post a comment and give me the error message and code. We will take it from there. Also please inform me what version of windows are you using and eventually an email adress for me to send various service programs required for the next stage (if the rom update fails to work).     I've seen you've tried some couple of things with the pda. Have you tried connecting the device to another computer? Try these first before attempting a ROM update. If your pda does the same with another computer then we can safely asume that the problem is related with the pda's firmware. If you have windows mobile 5 on your device I could give you a small program that enables your device to act as a universal mass storage device. In this way you can connect it to any computer without any drivers or programs just as an external hard disk or flash drive. This will make things easier untill we get it fixed.

You need to sync the old one with your PC, then simply set up a new partnership with your new Ipaq and sync it with that same PC.

Date & Time of calendar


Sounds like your PC is not set to adjust for daylight savings.... the ipaq automatically adjusts for daylight savings but the PC does not. On your PC double click on clock, click on Time Zone tab and then on that screen you will see the box that needs to be checked. also check that both PC and IPAQ are set to same time-zones.

Doosoft's mobsync is brilliant. I have used it for a year now to back up my SD card. It starts automatically when doccked. Also allows me to specify folders to back up on different schedules. http://doosoft.seesaa.net/

Hx4700 not sync all items in calendar


So make sure that you are displaying all categories.... If while on Calendar screen, you click on Tools, Categories... then all category boxes shown , should NOT be checked. If any of them are checked, then you will only be seeing that category of appointments.
