A microwave can be dead for many reasons.

If it goes dead for a while during or after cooking then comes back on, the magnetron is probably overheating and causing the magnetron thermostat to open.

Then when it cools, it closes the circuit and allows power through again.

If it's intermittent or random, it may be a bad connection, usually on the control board or a loose fuse holder, or even an intermittent fuse.

You should do a continuity test the fuse while it's in the holder (with the microwave unplugged, of course) then turn the fuse by hand or take it out and put it back in, then test it again.

If you remove the fuse, then press the meter leads against the ends, it can allow internal contact to be made and make a bad fuse appear to be good.

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

If it goes dead or blows the breaker when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / body of the oven.

If it has a hood thermostat, that should read open, as opposed to the others, which should read closed.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

SOURCE: microwave broken door latch

The door latch head (hook) is pretty easy to replace or repair if that's the issue.

If you gently push up on the door latches (hook-like devices on the door) there should be spring tension. If they just flop right up, the spring is off.

Normally the problem is not the spring, but a broken spring mounting tab on the door latch head (hook) assembly or the inner door panel.

If it's the door panel, it's usually easier and cheaper to use epoxy and some kind of hardware to fashion a new spring mount.

SOURCE: GE Spacemaker microwave JVM140G just stopped

NO internal fuse. It is most likely, the magnetron, and or High power diode. As related In all likelihood the mangnetron has failed, or perhaps even the Power Supply. or a fault that is shutting the system down for safety reasons You need to have it serviced by a reputable service centre/man. Ensure you get a firm "Quote" before proceeding, and remember these days the cost of repair can equal or exceed the price of a new one.

Hello estela281 :

Your microwave problem could be happen because of a bad door switch or loose door switch mount . There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly .

That could happen because of slamming the door and not closing it gently .

WARNING : A microwave oven is capable of giving you a serious electrical shock, even when it is unplugged. I strongly recommend you seek the assistance of an appliance repair technician when conducting any microwave oven repair .

GE Spacemaker microwave model JVM130J - handle loose

Yes, you're right about the screws. The inner door is held by clips. Just pop it out using a butter knife or something similar. You might need to remove the door from hinges first (It's been too long after I repaired one of these, so I don't remember exactly).

Humming ge sapcesaver microwave

During operation, most of the built-in models have a panel that tilts out while the exhaust fan is on. When cooking is done, the exhaust fan shuts off and the panel retracts to its normal position. With the fan & microwave motor off, the hum is easier to hear. Look closely at the top panel the next time you hear the hum, and you'll probably see that it's retracting.

If the oven is not heating food and the turntable is not rotating, it's a serious problem such a as a low voltage power supply, and up to replacing the magnetron (considering getting a gently used replacement oven on Craig's List or elsewhere).

If the oven has a turntable and is not rotating, that might be a separate (and easy-to-fix) problem by itself. I replaced mine, and it took 10 minutes.
If the turntable doesn't rotate, either the small ac motor has failed, or the coupling from the motor has come loose. Unplug the main power to the oven. Remove the 5 or 6 screws underneath the oven to remove the access panel to see the small ac motor. There will be an electrical plug with two wires connected to the small motor---unplug it. Take out the 2 screws that hold the motor in place, then inspect if anything seems to have come loose. If everything was mechanically o.k., then the motor is bad.
It's a fairly universal part number, a low voltage ac motor. Make sure that the voltage rating is the same when looking for a replacement. You could check on-line with a search-engine or Sears.

Good luck, hope this helps.
