SOURCE: Crackling Speakers and Headphones

It may be that your graphics and audio driver are conflicting with each other. Go to Start> Run, then type 'dxdiag' then hit Enter; this will run a sound and video diagnostics tool and check for problems. The only other thing if all the drivers are ok is a possible motherboard fault on the onboard sound chip.

SOURCE: can't mute inbuilt speakers

That is not a software problem.
The headphones/external speakers jack socket has a switch to exclude from audio the internal speakers, when a jack plug is connected.
This is a very simple device and is not software controlled.
The fact that it has gone faulty at the same time you reinstalled the system is a coincidence.
If it does not mute when you insert headphones, all you can do is trying to play with the jack plug , inserting and pulling it out. If this does not unlock the switch, the alternative is having the jack socket replaced by a technician. This is generally an expensive repair, asthe socked is soldered on motherboard.
A cheap alternative to a proper repair is using an external USB to Audio Adapter and mute the internal audicard when using headphones.

SOURCE: headphone jack not working

I got it fixed from the hp customer support. I was chatting with the expert and he provided the same solution and it worked. I removed all sound drivers and installed the latest updates and it worked. I only have one more thing to be solved. That is, the internal speakers doesn't get muted when i plug-in the headphone. I am trying to fix it. I will post here if it is fixed.

SOURCE: im having sony vaio VGN-NR32L and problem is that

since you have the drivers installed, go ahead and try a new set of speakers, if that doesnt' work then that means the motherboard is bad since they come out of the motherboard.

Make sure your volume control isn't muted and that its turned up to 100%. That at that point it will be the speakers to you have to try to make sure its not bad speakers. If that doesnt work then the motherboard isnt putting out sound and the motherrboard would have to be replaced.

My Sony Vaio laptop headphone stop working but the speaker is fine. How to solve the problem.

Try the headphone on another pc/audio device and see if it works. If it does then the problem is on your laptop. Just reinstall your laptop's audio driver using the driver cd that came with it. If you no longer have the driver cd, you can download it at http://esupport.sony.com/perl/select-system.pl?DIRECTOR=DRIVER&PRODTYPE=24&template_id=1®ion_id=1
