Fan Not Working

I have a Trane Heat Pump and the air conditioning mode is not working. The inside blower runs but the outside unit only makes a humming noise and the fan does not come on. Any ideas?

Brand New 2 weeks old 4 ton Trane compressor leaks a lot of water onto pad

If the unit is running in cold weather than there is ice building up on the coils located outside. This is normal in that the unit is running in heat pump mode heating inside and cooling outside, After the unit detects the ice build up it briefly reverses the cycle heating the outside coils melting(defrosting) the ice which you observe as water on the pad.

The video gives you an example of the defrost cycle!

Inside fan turns on when outside unit is in defrost mode when heat is selected. This causes it to blow cold air for about 10 to 15 minutes prior to the outside fan starting.

The inside fan will run while the unit is in defrost. The electric heat strips should kick on to help prevent you from feeling this cold air. When the unit is in defrost it is essentially running in the A/C mode. You should make sure the electric heat elements are working then go from there.

I have a Rheem Heat Pump unit. This winter, the outside unit fan at times trips off, but the inside unit keeps running continuously. I woke up one morning & it was 62 in the house. The inside unit ran...

Dear Friend!

Due to very low ambient temp, the fan will not run. Once the pressure build up, it's automatically run for some time and again cut off. But if you keep Heat mode and still tem not raised in your room means the reversable valve not working and hence the compressor and out side fan also will not work. Keep "Heat" mode and temp setting +29 to get better heat. Hope is it helpful?

Why does my fan runs continus. and the condenser won't run out side.

The fan runs continously because your condensor is not kicking on and removing the heat. The thermostat needs to come under the set temp. to kick off the fan. If your compressor doesn't run and the fan on the outside unit does run, your compressor has an issue. If nothing runs outside, then your transformer on the inside unit(air handler) has an issue. This could also be a control relay on the condenser or the air handler.

Recharge air condition

Hello,

If you have solid ice build up on the "big" pipe (suction line) and very little air coming out of the vents, it's more an air flow problem; Inside fan not working, dirty coil inside (evaporator) or block filter. Open the cabinet inside and take a look there first.

This should be easy to fix; if the filter is dirty, replace it. should be done every month anyway.

If the coil is dirty, depending on access there's a 50/50 chance you can clean it you're self. If you can't you will have to call a technician who will pump all the freon in the outside unit, disconnect the coil, clean it & reinstall it, that should run you $200 to $300

You say there is a little air coming out so the fan is probably working, but if not, you will to find out why the fan is not running. That's electrical, could as easy as the thermostat is not turning the fan on to replacing the fan it self.

It is possible to have frost coming back if you are undercharge (low on freon) But the conditions have to be just right. A Journeyman mechanical carrying an EPA license working under A license contractor is the minimum you need to be able to buy freon since the 90's. that's legal of coarse.

To charge a system you also need a set of gauges and you need to know the working pressure of the system depending of the freon inside.

I think you only have a block filter or a dirty evaporator, possibly a collapse duct.

Good luck
