Does it work without PS3 attached?
When receiver turns off, it is usually due to badly connected/configured speakers. Try powering on the receiver without speakers.

No DVD Picture

When you say "Traditional Cables", are you referring to the red, white, and yellow cables?

Once you connected those from Cd/DVD to the receiver, did you then connect another yellow cable from the "monitor out" on the receiver, to an input on your television?

This is generally the step that people forget about.

The back of your receiver should have a "monitor" or "tv" output on it. You need to connect another yellow cable from *it* to an input on your TV, then turn your TV to that specific input.

That should do the trick.

Problem hooking up my Yamaha RX-V461 to my PS3

When you connect the optical cable to the ps3 you must change the output to optical on the ps3. To do this, startup your ps3 then go to settings then audio output settings and change it to Digital Out (Optical).
