Turn it off and see if it will move by hand. If it dosen't look for debris in the bottom of the T/W, ifit dose but seems a little stiff lube the shaft or rails it slides on (WD40 works well).

How to unlock electric type writer?

Christine: According to VintageTypewritterShoppe.com: "Underwood portables have a simple carriage catch on the left side right below the carriage. Move the carriage to the right a few inches to disengage. Remington portables have two systems. Early portables require the sliding out of the platen shaft/knob on the right end of the carriage. The lock lever is located on the left end of the carriage and is spooned against the left side carriage release lever. Newer Remington's(Model 5/Streamliner/Deluxe) have a small lever on the left end of the carriage located in the same spot as the earlier models. There is a little ball on top of the lever. Push the lever to the rear to disengage the lock."

Typewriter cylinder barrel does not move in either direction

You didn't give a make or model but usually there is a lever just below the carriage on thbe R or L side that unlocks them.

Cannot unlock the carriage

There is a little lever under the carriage on the left, used for locking the carriage when in transit.Move the lever in the opposite direction,if that does not work press the Capital Lock Key then try it.If this does not work,it will be your carriage return spring having lost its tension. This is the round drum(wheel ) on the back of the carriage connected by a cord.

Hermes 3000 carriage is "locked."

I think there's a lock there in the spacing. Mine can be locked by pulling the spacing lever far upward. Just set your spacing and I think it will unlock.

Scanner carriage jammed #3 and #6 does nothing.

Check if you haven't moved the scanner lock lever accidentally - find the lock lever (used to immobilize the carriage in transport) and move it to locked position, then to unlocked, and power up your unit. Chances are that the carriage was not dislocated when trying to move while locked, and will start to operate.
If it's not that, it may be a number of things, like broken belt, encoder strip (if any), carriage motor fault - things you won't be able to repair yourself.

Hi there, i have an ADLER gabriele electric typewriter circa 1980's. somehow i have managed to lock myself out of it! i can't get the keys working. i have pressed a key or 2 and made it lock itself. any...

There is a carriage lock on either the right or left side of the carriage. It is a lever that moves back and forth to lock the carriage in the center for transportation.

Can't find carriage lock on Olivetti Lettera 25

Learn how to unlock the carriage in Olivetti Lettera 22 Manual posted by Ed Cornish (Carriage Locking Lever 7). It is a different machine model, but the lock/unlock mechanism might be the same.
You can see the full manual at Ed’s Flickr account or you can download it from here: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1322442/Olivetti%20Lettera%2022%20Manual.pdf (temporary link)

How do you unlock a locked carriage?

The solution is not right--there is a carriage return release lever on the far right of the typewriter, that engages a notch on the underside of the roller/carriage return--push it forward to release the lever and you are in business--it has a spoon shaped end and its on the right side
