V3840 heat strip doesn't get hot

Could be the heating element (wire that gets hot enough to melt plastic) is going bad, how long have you been sealing bags with the unit? If you have used it for some time there is the possibility of build up plastic/residue on the the wire or the surface that actually comes in contact with the bag as I would suspect there is a coated surface the element heats up as opposed to the element / wire coming in contact with the plastic itself!

I have a 1989 kenmore 27 fridge the streip where the freezer door shuts feels really hot right along the seal was wondering what it could be thanks

that is the strip heater that supposed to reduce moisture.I personally suggest keeping it turned on because it also helps keep the rubber seals soft.If you want it to turn off, there is a switch in the fresh food section that says "energy saver"-on to reduce moisture oroff to save energy. it doesn't really cost much to keep it on,maybe 75cents a month.
